James was more commonly known as Jim Bill to family and long-time friends, and Jim later in life. He graduated from Jefferson High School in San Antonio in 1962 and went on to earn his BA from Texas Tech University in 1966. There he met the love of his life, Susie Dennis, and they married on August 20, 1966.
Tech graduation happened in the thick of the Vietnam war, and Jim entered the United States Air Force. He proudly served his country for 20 years, earned a master’s degree during that time, and achieved the rank of Lieutenant Colonel before retiring in 1987. After his first retirement, he went on to turn his beloved hobby of woodworking into a thriving business that afforded him the opportunity to travel and attend trade shows and conferences around the US. Once he stepped back from his business, Jim enjoyed shooting, hunting with his grandson, spending time with family, and reconnecting with a group of high school friends known as the Lunch Bunch.
Jim Bill was a wonderful father, a loving and involved grandpa and great-grandpa, and a great friend. He never met a stranger and had “friends” everywhere he went. He was universally loved and will be missed by many for his kindness, humor, and ability to “make a short story long.” As with anything he did, he exceeded expectations and lived past the predicted timeframe for his illness. We are so grateful Jim had the opportunity to see two grandchildren married, meet his first great-grandchild, and spend the holidays with family.
Jim is survived by his loving wife, Susie Robbins; daughters, Jennifer Comstock (Matthew) and Deborah Stack (Clint Sommer); grandchildren, Madison Comstock Kracht, Jack Comstock, Payton Stack Tubbs, Emerson Stack, Larson Stack, Jack Sommer, and Vivian Sommer; great-granddaughter, Fallon Luna Kracht; sister, Sandra Johnston; and nephews, Eric Johnston, Jeff Johnston, and Chris Johnston. He will also be missed by his former “shop cat,” Ray (Raymond Burr).
