James Benjamin Shaw, Jr.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Albert ("Amos"), his sister, Katherine Johnson, and his mother and father.

James was born in Parker County, Texas on November 28, 1927 to James Benjamin and Zuella Milburn Shaw. He lost his father at a young age, and became man of the house, helping raise his little brother and getting a hardship driver's license at age 14 to assist his mom as she took on her new role as breadwinner. He enlisted in the Navy at age 17 and then again a few years later, serving during both WWII and the Korean War. He attended LeTourneau University in Longview, Texas, and earned an Associate's Degree in Machine Science. While attending LeTourneau, he met and married his lifelong love, Polly Thorpe. After his second tour in the Navy, they settled in San Antonio, where they raised their two children, Pam and Jim. James worked for Champion/International Paper for more than thirty years, retiring as Mechanical Superintendent in 1997.

James is survived by his wife of 62 years, Polly, his sister, Elouise, his children, daughter Pam Neubauer and husband Ed, son James (Jim) Benjamin Shaw III and wife, Jessica, and his six grandchildren, Shawston Edward and wife, Kate, Cody Albert, and Lindsey Paige Neubauer, and Micaela Katherine, Kelsie Erin and Peyton James Shaw.

James was a devoted husband, father, and grandpa. He loved fishing, hunting and spending time outdoors with his kids and grandkids. He was a kind, strong, generous man of deep faith who enjoyed reading the bible every day. He knew that when he was called home, he would reside in the house of the Lord for eternity. As our time with him drew to a close, it was his words giving us strength, his faith deepening our own. He will be dearly missed by friends and family, and forever in our hearts.

The family would like to thank friends, neighbors, and relatives who have been so generous with their love, prayers, and support.

Interment with Full Military Honors will take place at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery on November 30th at 12:30pm.
