
With heavy hearts and deep gratitude for a life well lived, we honor the memory of James Thomas “Jim” Shelton, who passed away peacefully on March 15, 2026, at the age of 81.
Jim was born on April 9, 1944, in Polo, Missouri, to JT and Frieda Shelton. He was the youngest of five children and the only son. Jim grew up on the family farm, played multiple sports throughout school, graduated from Polo High School, and then joined the United States Marine Corps.
Jim proudly served throughout the Vietnam War and returned home to Missouri, where he met the love of his life, Barbara Everhart, through a blind date with a Marine Corps friend. Jim and Barbara were married on November 18, 1967, in St. Louis, Missouri.
Together, Jim and Barb built a beautiful life centered on love, family, and adventure. They welcomed two daughters, Jil and Cathy. Jim’s career in Federal Civil Service took the family across the world, allowing for unforgettable experiences and countless lifelong friendships. He proudly retired on August 3, 2006, after 26 years of Federal Service in San Antonio, Texas.
Jim and Barb embraced retirement by traveling, enjoying life with family, and especially cherishing their fishing trips to Roaring River.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, JT Shelton and Frieda Shelton; his sister, Betty Sue Sams; his mother-in-law, Helen Everhart; and his father-in-law, Tom Everhart.
Jim leaves behind his wife of 58 years, Barbara Shelton; daughters, Jil Schexnayder and Cathy Shelton; son-in-law, Kevin Schexnayder; grandchildren, Kevin J. Schexnayder, Claire Schexnayder,Sophia Schexnayder, Aleni Vega, Sergio Vega, and Aria Vega, granddaughter-in-law, Sophia K. Schexnayder; sisters, Barbara Stephens, Shirley Rushing, and Sharon Tindall; brothers-in-law, Houston Rushing, Chuck Sams, Duane Tindall, and Karl Everhart; sister-in-law, Betsy Everhart; and countless nieces and nephews.
Jim will be dearly missed. His love of a great cigar, a Cardinals baseball game, a Cowboys football game, and the special memories made with Barb at Roaring River will live on forever.
