James H. Wright, Sergeant Major, U.S. Army (Ret.), 66, of San Antonio, Texas died on July 4, 2012, after an illness. Born in Smyrna, Delaware, he grew up largely on farms in the area. He married his wife in Seoul, Korea, with whom he recently celebrated 46 years of marriage. James enlisted in the U.S. Army in search of greater opportunity after graduating from high school. His 27 years of service included tours in Korea, Japan, Georgia, Italy, Virginia and Texas. He was recognized throughout his military career with many awards and medals, including the Legion of Merit, Army Commendation Medal (Third Oak Leaf Cluster), and Army Achievement Medal (First Oak Leaf Cluster). His last assignment was at Ft. Sam Houston, Headquarters, Health Services Command. He retired in 1991. After retirement, he received his B.S. in Occupational Education from Wayland Baptist University. He worked for the City of San Antonio and then St. Philip's College for sixteen years where he served as Director of Middle College Programs and State Director for Skills USA. At St. Philip's, he founded the Women in Non-Traditional Occupations group. James generously and lovingly helped others, eager to teach them life's lessons. He used stories about his own life to encourage others "to do the best they can with what they have," no matter how tough their circumstances. He never sought anything in return. He also inspired others by being creative, original in thought, and his own person. James was very proud of his service to our country, had great faith in God, and loved life and his family most of all. He is survived by his wife, daughter Chun Wright, of Upper Marlboro, MD, son James H. Wright, Jr., of San Antonio, TX, and dog, Cookie. He is also survived by two brothers and four sisters. The family expresses gratitude to Amedisys Hospice for their compassionate care and SAMMC for their excellent medical treatment.
