Jane was born on December 21, 1928, in Laredo, Texas, and grew up with a strong sense of family, faith, and determination—qualities that shaped every chapter of her life. She graduated from Incarnate Word High School, earned her degree of Bachelor of Science from Trinity University, and earned her degree of Master of Education from the University of Texas. On July 25, 1953, she married the love of her life, Travis “Poole” Crowther, beginning a 60-year partnership marked by devotion, resilience, and adventure.
As an Army officer’s wife, Jane created a warm and welcoming home wherever the U.S. Army sent their young family: Fort Sill, Oklahoma; Schofield Barracks, Hawaii; Fort Hood, Texas; Fort Leavenworth, Kansas; West Germany; and Fort Sam Houston, Texas. She raised two boys with devotion and steadiness, and during Poole’s two tours of Vietnam service, she was both mother and father—guiding her sons with strength and unwavering love.
A teacher by training and by nature, Jane nurtured not only her own children but countless others. She was a wonderful cook, an avid gardener, and the heart of every home she touched. After Poole’s retirement in 1975, they remained in San Antonio, where they spent the rest of their lives in their cherished garden home in Oakwell Farms. Jane was a long-time member of the Bexar County Republican Women’s Club and especially enjoyed volunteering with her friends to work on the campaigns of their favorite political candidates.
Together, Jane and Poole traveled widely—across the United States with frequent trips to the Canadian Rocky Mountains and Western Europe. They especially loved fishing trips with friends along the Gulf Coast, day trips across South Texas, and visits with their boys’ families where they loved visiting with their grandchildren.
After Poole’s passing in 2013, Jane continued to embrace life with quiet courage. She treasured traveling with her son J.B. and granddaughter Elizabeth on trips to South Padre Island, West Texas, New Mexico, Virginia, Georgia, Florida, and South Carolina. She remained close to her high school girlfriends, finding joy in their lifelong bond. Above all, she loved being in her home, surrounded by the memories she and Poole built together.
Jane is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law J.B. and Valerie Crowther and Richard and Carrie Crowther, her grandsons Travis and Benjamin and granddaughters Elizabeth and Brianne. Jane was a mother and grandmother to a family who will forever carry her strength, kindness, and spirit in their hearts. She was preceded in death by her husband Poole, her parents James Henry Walsh and Alice Jane Dewey.
Her life was a testament to devotion—devotion to her family, to her marriage, to her home, and to the quiet, steady acts of love that shaped everyone who knew her.
She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
