Born on May 2, 1948, in San Antonio, Texas Janet was the beloved daughter of J. Fred and Dorothy Koethe. From an early age, it was clear that Janet possessed a free spirit and an unwavering dedication to her dreams and principles. She pursued her passion for education and leadership, earning a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Incarnate Word and a Master of Science from UTSA. This dedication translated into a remarkable 41-year career in education, where she touched and enriched countless lives as both a teacher and a principal. In each of the schools she taught, Janet was recognized for her excellence, being named Teacher of the Year and leading her schools as a Principal to exemplary rankings.
Janet’s love for her community was as expansive as her dedication to education. As a steadfast member of the Conservation Society for over 50 years, as well as serving as President, she played a pivotal role in preserving San Antonio’s heritage, including the UNESCO designation of the San Antonio Missions and the preservation of the historic Woolworth’s building. Her legacy of service extended to over five decades with NIOSA, a founding member of the Magik Children’s Theatre, and member of the Presidential Circle of the San Antonio Fiesta Commission. Janet further demonstrated her leadership as President of the San Antonio Cotillion and enhanced the VIP Tent experience at the Cowboy Breakfast.
Her vibrant spirit was matched by her zest for life, which found expression in her love for animals, especially horses and border collies, and her avid support of the Future Farmers of America. Janet’s adventurous spirit led her to enjoy skiing, armadillo races, and dancing across Texas to country and western bands. She competed and excelled at drag races due to her competitive nature. She was a great writer and penned numerous heartfelt notes and poetry to her favorite cowboy.
Janet’s warm heart and welcoming nature made her a cherished friend to many. She was known for her high principles and standards, always ensuring those around her felt seen and appreciated. Her ability to forge deep, meaningful connections was unparalleled, leaving a lasting mark on everyone she encountered.
Janet leaves behind a legacy of love and devotion, survived by her loving husband of 57 years, Artie; her sister, Joyce Stratton (Richard); and her sister from another mother, Eucebia “Chata” Gomez.
