Janice Reed Mathews

Born on September 30, 1926, in Reidsville, N.C. to Grace Aldridge Reed and Grady Reed, Janice was known for her beauty, tenacity and athletic grace. She was a 1948 graduate of Trinity University in San Antonio.

After completing her education, she married William Randolph Mathews Jr. Randy of San Antonio and began life as a devoted army officer's wife. She followed him on assignments to Japan, Germany and several stateside locations.

Janice loved to play Bridge and entertain their many friends, and learned to become an accomplished home-cook and hostess. Upon retirement from the military, Janice and Randy settled in San Antonio where they quickly became involved in the early growth and active community of Windcrest.

Her beloved husband, Randy, preceded her in death just prior to their 50th wedding Anniversary in 1997.

She is survived by her brother, Grady Reed Jr. of San Antonio, as well as her two children: son, Randy Mathews III and wife, Diane, of San Antonio, and her daughter, Patty Campbell, and husband, Ralph, of Newport News, VA.; two grandchildren, Dolph Mathews and Brad Bellamy, both of San Antonio.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorial contributions be made to the Cancer Therapy and Research Center, P.O. Box 1657, San Antonio, TX 78296 or the San Antonio Public Library Foundation, P.O. Box 15307, San Antonio, TX 78212.

The family also wants to recognize with gratitude the wonderful care she received from the Health Care staff at the Army Retirement Community.
