Juanita Garza (Janie) Flores was called home and entered eternal rest on April 17, 2024, at the age of 89. Janie was born in Von Ormy, Texas on January 8,1935 to her parents Manuel Garza and Simona Sauceda.
She was the seventh of eight siblings, having six older sisters and the youngest being her only brother. Her mother Simona moved Janie and her siblings to San Antonio at a very young age. She grew up in San Antonio eventually having to work to help support her family along with her siblings. As she grew older, she moved out on her own. She worked at Finesilver Manufacturing Company and worked at St. Francis Nursing Home just north of downtown San Antonio where her older sister Rosie, who was already employed there, took her under her wing.
Janie met her future husband Raul “Rudy” Flores, when she visited El Tenampa Bar located at the corner of Houston St. and Camaron St. in downtown San Antonio where they began a relationship and eventually married. She had two children and was a stay at home mom until they were old enough to attend school. She then began to be more involved in the bar business with her husband. Ultimately, she and Rudy Sr. ran the business together until his death in 1991, only to continue operating El Tenampa Bar together with her son, Rudy Jr. for twenty more years. Janie closed the business which she and her husband operated after serving customers in downtown San Antonio for a combined total of fifty-five years.
Janie was a beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother and godmother. She had a sense of humor and a loud infectious laugh that made you want to have fun when she was around. She was a businesswoman even though she did not acknowledge it. She was a great cook, whether in the kitchen or grilling outdoors, making sure everyone who wanted to eat was fed. She always knew how to throw a great party. Janie was a big Dallas Cowboy’s fan and loved sports. She was also a great dancer and loved to cut a rug with her husband at dances, weddings, and quinceneras.
Janie is preceded in death by her husband Raul Armando Flores Sr., her parents Manuel Garza and Simona Sauceda: sisters Isabel, Aurora, Ester, Celistina (Ester), Rosa, Maria and brother, Juan Jose.
