Jason Thomas Cunningham, 31, of San Antonio and formerly Cedar Park, Texas, died unexpectedly of a cardiac episode at home on July 4, 2020.
Born on January 1, 1989, Jason’s short life was appropriately book-ended by days of celebration. As a big brother, he asserted his dominance early on, taking one look at the new baby (for whom another name had been previously been selected) and declared, “Nope. He looks like a Chad.” And so it was. He fell in love with his brother and wanted to be his caretaker from that day forward.
A sweet homebody with a heart of gold, he loved movies and all things Marvel. Jason never shied away from a good joke and known for an extensive collection of funny t-shirts with absurd sayings. Whether it was the Beastie Boys, Daft Punk or the latest techno dance music or anything with a beat made up the soundtrack of his life. After graduating Cedar Park High School, Jason worked in appliance repair and facility maintenance.
Above everything else Jason loved being a father to his children, Thalon, 9, and Ella, 5, who brought out the very best in him. It was not unusual to find the three of them piled on one another watching movies, telling stories, playing, and making each other laugh. Not afraid to skin a knee or don a tiara, Jason truly lived for his kids.
Family was truly a priority; he was protective of his mother and considered his grandfather, Cecil, a true role model.
Jason is survived by his children Thalon Knight Cunningham (with Celeste Rodriguez) and Ella Rene (with Samantha Spyhalski) all of Austin, parents Lisa Ann Martin of San Antonio; Grandparents Col. (Ret.) Cecil E. Martin, PhD. and Virginia Rae Martin of San Antonio, Brother Chad Ray Cunningham, Step-Siblings John Hall and Stacie Stephens, all of Austin; Aunt Diane Michelle Martin and husband Patrick of Houston and Uncle T.C. Martin and wife Teresa of San Antonio, Cousins Stephen Thomas Martin, Megan Michelle Mullins, Madison Nicole Emge, Daniel Trujillo-Martin, Averie Martin and Brylie Martin.
Due to restrictions related to COVID-19, there will be a small family service with closer friends on July 18 at Sunset Funeral Home on Austin Highway in San Antonio, TX.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund for Thalon and Ella has been set up.
