Jean Marie was born on October 5, 1939, in Scranton, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Ann and Carl LeBoutillier. Raised in Scranton, she graduated from West Scranton High School in 1957 and married the love of her life, William “Bill” Armitage, in 1960. Together, they shared a remarkable marriage of 64 and a half years.
The daughter of a true coal miner, Jean Marie carried strength, resilience, and humility throughout her life. When her husband Bill joined the United States Air Force, Jean Marie embraced the adventure of military life, supporting her family as they traveled and lived around the world. Their assignments took them to Plattsburgh, NY; Hawaii; Miami, FL; Okinawa, Japan; Hampton, VA; and finally, San Antonio, TX, where they made their permanent home.
Jean Marie worked in many roles over the years and was proud of her work as an administrative assistant at St. Mary’s University, where she became affectionately known as “Saint Marie” to friends and colleagues.
With her big brown eyes and beautiful smile, Jean Marie touched the hearts of everyone she met. To know her was to love her. A devoted member of St. Anthony de Padua Catholic Church, Jean Marie rooted her life in faith and family.
Jean Marie was preceded in death by her sister, Ann Cadden, husband James, sister-in-law Ann Leboutillier, sister-in-law Sharon Colwell, husband Gary, and brother-in-law Lee Kersten. She is survived by her husband William; her daughters Erin Stevens and Maureen Armitage; her son William Armitage; her nine grandchildren and great-granddaughter, who were the pride and joy of her life. She is also survived by her dear sister Barbara VanLouvender, husband Lou, her brother Thomas LeBoutillier, and sister-in-law Ilene Kersten; bonus daughter Kelly Frey.
