

JEANNE AMACKER BROWNING, 79, of San Antonio passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on March 4, 2022. She and her surviving husband Robert Browning enjoyed over 54 years married together. Their all surviving children include: Eloise Browning and Catherine Browning of San Antonio; Sarah Griffin (husband Rev. Dr. Howard Griffin) of Amarillo; Helen Silantien (husband Dr. John Silantien) of Grey Forest; Rev. Dr. Carolyn Helsel (husband Rev. Dr. Philip Helsel) of Austin; and Chris Browning (wife Mickie Browning) of San Antonio. Jeanne was a caring mother who was always there for each of them and delighted in her ten grand children and numerous nieces and nephews.
Jeanne was the oldest sibling born June 5, 1942 in Beaumont to Jeanne Richey and Clayton Miller Amacker (both graduates of University of Texas at Austin, part of a four generation tradition). Her all surviving siblings are Joanie Haley (brother-in-law Don Haley); Judy Leavell; and Clayton Amacker Jr. (sister-in-law Hilary Amacker). Jeanne was a gifted singer and sang at each of her siblings weddings.
Jeanne attended schools in Beaumont and was active there in St. Andrews Presbyterian Church singing in the choir.
She attended Camp Waldemar where she won the best posture award; and later she contributed to a book about the camp.
In high school she traveled the world (from Okinawa to Greenland) with the Beaumont Melody Maids, performing for the military.
At UT she was a member of Pi Beta Phi and the Ashbel Literary Society.
Jeanne was crowned Miss Texas in 1963 and participated in the Miss America pageant in Atlantic City where she was voted Miss Congeniality. She pursued graduate studies in radio, television and film and worked briefly at WOAI as a Girl Friday in the News department. Jeanne loved to write, and wrote poetry. She was a member of several book clubs including the FPC Literature Circle. Jeanne loved the LORD and was a regular participant in church Bible studies.
She was a duchess in the Order of the Alamo Court of 1962 as was her mother Jeanne Richey in 1940 and her daughter Sarah Jeanne in 1997.
Jeanne lived for over 54 years in San Antonio where she was a member of First Presbyterian Church. She was a member of the Junior League. She was a member of Chapter X of PEO, and she was a member of First Presbyterian Church Friday Singers.
Jeannes family has many happy memories of vacation travels to Mo-Ranch, the CL Browning Ranch at Johnson City, Port Aransas, Northern New Mexico, and Colorado.
Jeanne was generous in giving her time and attention to others. She kept up with people and remembered important things in their lives.
A celebration of Jeannes life will be held at First Presbyterian Church, 404 N. Alamo St., 78205, on Wednesday, March 9, 2022, 4pm with a reception following in the McCullough Room. Prior to this, family and friends will gather for an interment service at 2:30pm at Sunset Memorial Park, 1701 Austin Highway, 78218, with Rev. Dr. Howard Griffin and Rev. Dr. Carolyn Helsel officiating.
