Jeannie Sonntag White, age 67, of San Antonio, passed away Tuesday, May 10 after a long and difficult battle with cancer. For the past 6 years, she showed great strength, courage, and grace as she continued to fight.
Born and raised in Fort Worth, Texas, Jeannie attended Amon Carter Riverside High School and was active in the youth group at St. Paul Lutheran Church. After high school, Jeannie moved to Seguin, Texas to attend Texas Lutheran College (now Texas Lutheran University) where she graduated in 1969. While at TLC, she earned her education degree and met Bob White, her husband of 35 years.
In 2007, Jeannie retired from North East ISD in San Antonio, where she taught for the majority of her 30-year teaching career. She taught Biology at Madison High School and was very proud of the "Mighty Mavericks." While at Madison, she coached volleyball, basketball, soccer, and track, and later she traded in her whistle for dance shoes where she became sponsor of the pepe squad. After retirement, Jeannie volunteered at Christus Santa Rosa Hospital in the recovery room, a service she truly enjoyed.
Jeannie was an active member of King of Kings Lutheran Church in San Antonio for close to 30 years. During that time she served on various boards, taught Sunday school, helped with Vacation Bible School, and sang with the Praise Team, an activity she particularly enjoyed. In 2012, Jeannie joined St. Paul Lutheran Church in Bulverde, Texas where she volunteered as the director of the Youth Praise Band and joined a mission trip to Guatemala.
Her most enjoyable and fulling role was that of grandma. "Grandma Jeannie" was the Number 1 Fan at every sporting event, choir concert, and any other event in which her six precious grandkids participated. Additionally, she known as "Grandma Jeannie" to countless other friends and family whose lives she touched.
A loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, Jeannie will be missed by all. She filled our hearts with love and laughter and was a true example of grace and Christian faith. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bob White and parents, Edwin and Maxine Sonntag.
Jeannine is survived by her daughter, Margaret Kaysa and husband, Richard of San Antonio; daughter, Kathy Von Buettner and husband, Kurt of San Antonio; son, Matt White and wife, Elizabeth of Fredericksburg; grandchildren, Thomas and Travis Von Buettner, Bailey and Garrett Kaysa, Nathan and Jake White and siblings, Fran Latour and Eddie Sonntag of Austin.
The family will receive friends and relatives on Tuesday, May 17, 2016 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Porter Loring Mortuary North, 2102 North Loop 1604 East.
