Jennet Pohl Spillers, age 76, passed on to greater things May 28, 2004, in San Antonio, Texas. An "Army Brat," she was born in Dayton, Ohio, to Colonel Herman H. Pohl and Jane Andrews Pohl and lived in many places during her younger years.
She is survived by her husband, Willum H. Spillers, Brig Gen USAF-Ret, whom she met at West Point while she was attending college in New York and he was a Cadet at the U.S. Military Academy. They were married in 1949 after graduation and lived at many locations throughout their Air Force career. Her husband started flight training in San Antonio, Texas, at Randolph, AFB.
She is also survived by three children: Dr. Robert I. Spillers, DVM and his wife Kristine N. Spillers of San Antonio; Sgt. Mark R. Spillers, Texas DPS and his wife
Vickie B. Spillers of College Station, Texas; and Ms. Jennifer S. Brockman of Schertz, Texas. She also has seven grandchildren: Michael W. Spillers, Kristina I. Spillers, and Cherrie J. Spillers, all of Austin, Texas; Douglas S. Spillers, of Bryan, Texas, Donnie S. Spillers, and Brian S. Spillers of San Marcos, Texas; and Mark Jonathan Spillers of San Antonio, Texas.
Jennet performed many duties during her life as a military wife supporting her husband during his career. Many moves and school changes required her to play a major part in the raising of their three children. While also supporting her husband's military career, she was a gracious hostess, a leader, and participant in the military wives' functions on base. Her husband and she bought a house in San Antonio for future retirement while he was Vice Commander of the San Antonio Air Logistic Center at Kelly AFB, San Antonio.
After a short tour at HQ Military Airlift Command where her husband was Deputy Chief of Staff, Logistics, she played an important role as hostess and his partner in any official military functions. They retired in 1976 and returned to their home in San Antonio, Texas.
Jennet has touched the lives of many people. She was noted as a gourmet cook and a charming and friendly hostess who brought a breath of spring to any gathering. She was a loving, devoted and supportive wife and friend to her husband. To her children, she was always ready to help and encourage them in seeking their goals in life. To her daughters-in-law she was a friend and always ready to help when needed.
To her grandchildren she was there when needed for support and was ready to participate in their activities, whether it was scuba diving, riding an elephant or camel, or just plain offering encouragement and advice when needed. To them she was not a typical grandmother, she was always young at heart and will be remembered as a one of a kind when God "broke the mold" after He made her.
After retirement, she pursued her many interests: cooking, stained glass work, arts and crafts projects, painting and traveling with her husband in their converted bus. For years she loved cutting and maintaining their lawn, and loved gardening and had a large collection of flowers and plants. She was also an avid domino player and she and her husband have played for many years with the same group of friends. She will surely be missed.
She was a member of the St. George Maronite Catholic Church and loved working in the kitchen preparing food for their social activities. Jennet, you have brought a ray of sunshine and have touched the lives of many people. You "have done good." You will be missed by all. We love you. Rest in peace!
