Jeraldine Miller "Jerry" Mariner, 90 years young, peacefully passed from this world on March 5, 2014. Her upbeat attitude, kind spirit, and strength through adversity will remain a legacy for those of us left behind. Jerry was born in Monmouth, Illinois on November 3, 1923 to Jacob and Margaret Miller.
The family later relocated to Galesburg, Illinois, where Jerry spent her childhood and young adult years. Jerry married the love of her life, Philip C. Mariner, on September 1, 1946 in Galesburg. After entering the banking industry, Phil later accepted a job in San Antonio and the family moved to Texas. Jerry and Phil spent many happy years, together with their children, as members of the San Antonio community. Phil once gave Jerry a golden ring in the shape of an apple, declaring her the "apple of his eye." Many years a widow, Jerry wore it for the rest of her life.
Jerry is remembered as a loving, independent and courageous woman. Always cheerful and happy, Jerry took great pride in her appearance. She was great company, enjoying wholesome jokes and brisk conversation. Jerry was a "jazzy lady" who enjoyed her collection of big band records.
She happily celebrated her recent 90th birthday in November at a party hosted by loving friends Charles, Sudie, Carl, Will, Jenny and baby Charlie Holshouser. Jerry was a member of Alamo Heights United Methodist Church. She enjoyed volunteering at Thursday's "lunch bunch" for many years. Jerry was also a member of PEO Chapter BX, holding many leadership offices, and an active member of the Assistance League of San Antonio.
Jerry is predeceased by her husband Phil, who passed away in 1982.
She is survived by her two children and their families, daughter Lynn and son-in-law John Holt of Flint, Texas, as well as son Lawrence P. "Larry" and daughter-in-law Helen Mariner of Del Rio, Texas. Jerry has four grandchildren and one great-grandson, including grandson Christopher Holt, his wife Megan along with their son Dylan, granddaughter Emily Holt, grandson Travis Mariner, and granddaughter Stacy Mariner White with her husband, Greg. Additionally, Jerry is survived by her sister Dona Hoopes of Galesburg, IL, niece Nancy Johnson, nephew Brad Johnson with his wife Syndi and their children Megan and Andrew, and nephew Stan Johnson with his wife Carol and their children Craig, Alan, Courtney and John. Special thanks are given to all of Jerry's caretakers from The Forum at Lincoln Heights. She was able to remain fiercely independent for many years under their watchful keep. Jerry was well cared for by Dr. Paul Smith, MD, who provided great comfort and consultation.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, March 13th from 4:00pm to 6:00pm at Porter Loring Mortuary - 1101 McCullough Ave, San Antonio, Texas 78212.
