Jerry Joe Shubert, born in Herington, Kansas on June 21st, 1948, son of Marion and Margaret Shubert, passed away on June 9, 2026. Jerry was the devoted husband of Sarajane Blythe Shubert whom he married on December 29, 2007.
Jerry was a special kind of person who effortlessly brought people together. He had a knack for fostering relationships, through empathy, engaging conversation or just radiating welcoming, positive energy.
Jerry demonstrated leadership in the Future Farmers of America during his high school years and served as president of his local FFA chapter. Jerry earned his Bachelor of Science in AgEcon and his Air Force Commission at Kansas State University in 1970. During his Air Force career, Jerry was based in California, North Carolina, and for a year in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam Conflict, flying during the Linebacker 2 campaign in 1972. He took immense pride in his role as a radar navigator in the B-52G. Jerry was a bit of a thrill seeker and loved skimming mountainous terrain at night at 400 feet traveling 400 miles per hour. One of the most rewarding times of his life was being part of a team where crew members depended on each other. Flying became a passion and later he earned his private pilot license.
Jerry’s skills were recognized by the Air Force leading to completion of a Master of Science degree in Computing Science from Texas A&M University. He served his remaining years in the Air Force as a programmer in Michigan and at the Pentagon.
After retirement from the Air Force in 1990 as Lieutenant Colonel, Jerry devoted his time to his family. He moved to North Carolina, helping to maintain the household and raise his son, Lee. During those years he kept busy with many projects ranging from political campaign management to raising cattle. He developed a passion for collecting tractors and enjoyed hunting for vintage Johnny-pop John Deere tractors as he believed nothing ran like a Deere.
Moving back to Kansas, he later reconnected with Sarajane Doty where they were married. He found a passion for teaching and established a robotics program at Junction City High School, where he taught for 8 years. Jerry and Sarajane moved to Texas in 2016, where he volunteered with various school-based robotics programs.
Jerry was preceded in death by his sister, Marlene Marie Moulds. He is survived by his wife Sarajane, his daughter Tamara Hayward (Don) of Fort Worth, Texas, son Lee Shubert of Charlotte, North Carolina, stepson Justin Doty (Brittany) of San Antonio, stepdaughter Claire Riley of Eddington, Maine, eight grandchildren (Ben, Megan, Caleb, Cole, Jocelyn, Charlotte, JR and AJ), brother Larry Shubert of Manhattan, Kansas and brother-in-law Bob Moulds of Easton, Pennsylvania.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at North Shore United Methodist Church (23880 N. Cranes Mill Road, Canyon Lake, TX 78133) on Saturday, June 20th at 11 am with a reception to follow. Interment will be at the Wilsey, Kansas Cemetery at a later date. Memorial contributions may be sent to North Shore United Methodist Church.
