It is with heavy hearts that we announce the unexpected passing of our beloved Jiawei “Josh” Chen Forster, at the age of 30, in San Antonio, Texas. Josh was born on December 4, 1993, in Shanghai, China, to his mother, Ying “Lily” Chen Forster, and biological father, Jian Gu. Josh's journey led him to San Jose, California at the tender age of 13, then settling in San Antonio, Texas at the age of 26, where he built a life filled with passion, joy, and inspiring pursuits.
Josh was a warrior in more ways than one, with a love for martial arts that extended beyond a mere hobby. He began his martial arts journey at Wushu, where he studied under Sifu Chang, and later, at Studio Martial Arts, where he was mentored by Sifu Ram and Mr. Harrison. Josh’s dedication was so profound that he was on the cusp of achieving his black belt—an achievement that spoke volumes about his determination and resilience.
A devoted member of his church, Josh found solace and strength in his faith, forming connections with others who shared his spiritual journey. He especially enjoyed gathering with his friends and fellow brothers at Community Bible Church for such groups as “Thirsty Thursdays” and on Fridays, “Eric’s Home Bible Study”. The family would like to extend a special thanks to everyone at Community Bible Church, especially Pastor Adrian and Pastor Ed, who continuously went out of their way to make sure Josh felt comfortable and accepted amongst his peers.
Among his many interests, Josh had a profound love for food, anime, singing, dancing, and the world of gaming. Whether it was the strategic world of Monopoly or the whimsical adventures of the Super Mario Bros., he embraced each moment with a contagious enthusiasm that touched the lives of those around him.
Dreams were the fuel that powered Josh's spirit, and he aspired to follow in the footsteps of his brother by becoming a YouTube personality. With his own channel, "jsteve7," he embarked on a creative journey, sharing his unique perspective and bringing smiles to those who tuned in.
Josh's pursuit of knowledge was not confined to his online endeavors. He had recently commenced his college journey at Northeast Lakeview, where he discovered a great passion for the digital arts after completing a course in the field.
Despite facing challenges due to his disability, Josh was a hard worker who contributed three years to his job at Six Flags Fiesta Texas, and most recently, Wendy’s. He was also surrounded by an incredible circle of friends who cherished him for the vibrant, caring soul he was. His impact on others went beyond the physical, as he radiated a warmth that transcended any limitations life presented.
Josh is preceded in death by his grandfathers, Xiao Zhang, Paul Forster, James Grace, and Gu De Ming; grandmother, Yu Hui Juan; auntie, Su Hui Qin; great grandparents, Tang Wen Hua, Zhu Yue Ying, Chen Jian Zhang, and Chen Gin Di; and great auntie Chen Yu Bao.
He is survived by his loving mother, Ying “Lily” Chen Forster and her husband, Keith Forster, Josh’s stepfather, who loved and cared for him as his own; his biological father, Jian Gu; his brothers, Justin “J.J” and Andrew James “A.J.”; his godbrother, Jay; cousin, Benjamin; and Auntie Sandra and Uncle Kenny; Uncle Steven and Aunt Brooke; his grandmother, Hazel Martinez, and grandfather, Geronimo Martinez; his grandmother Peiying Tang and grandfather Yuanxing Chen; and numerous other extended family members and dear friends. Josh also leaves behind his beloved dogs, Catie, Joyce, and especially Murphy, with whom he shared a special bond.
A few things Josh taught everyone: always smile, enjoy every day, don’t get caught up in the cares of life. Love everyone the same, listen, and be patient with each other.Simply, the Golden Rule….
From the Far East to the Western World, he always carried these same thoughts.
In celebrating the life of Jiawei "Josh" Chen Forster, we remember a man who lived passionately, loved deeply, and left an enduring legacy of joy. His spirit will forever echo in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to share in the beauty of his journey.
May he rest in eternal peace.
