

Joan Lenore Kingsley peacefully went to be with the Lord at home with her life partner, Bonnye Bond, by her side on Saturday, January 9th, 2016. Joan was born on January 31, 1934 in New York, NY. She was raised in Bronxville and attended Bronxville High School. While in high school Joan was a member of the girls soccer team and band, were she played the trombone and baritone. She obtained a BS degree in Physical Education and Health, along with a MS and PH.D degree in Physical Education from New York University. The title of her doctorate dissertation was "The Effectiveness of Teacher Large Motor Skills by the Spaced Unite Method as Compared with the Continuous Unit Method." She also did special study at Penn State. She later returned to school to obtain another MS degree in Counseling from the State University of New York College at Oneonta.
Joan started her career as a physical education teacher at Walton Central School in Walton, NY where she taught girl's physical education grades 5-12 and coached the interscholastic sports of soccer, field hockey, volleyball, basketball, softball, and archery. While at Walton she implemented an annual girl's gym demonstration which included gymnastics, modern dance, marching, folk dance, and team sports. In 1963 she became a faculty member in the Department of Health and Physical Education at the State University College at Oneonta, NY. She taught numerous health courses along with golf, tennis, archer, badminton, paddleball, fencing, swimming, and horsemanship. She also coached the university varsity teams such as, field hockey, basketball, softball, and fencing. In 1969 Joan was named the Director of Women's Athletics and in 1975 she was named the Chairperson of the Department of Health and Physical Education at the State University College at Oneonta, NY. She was the first woman in the state of New York to hold that position. Joan was the director of Women's Coaching Clinics and Workshops, was a highly regarded speaker on athletic issues, and the Director of Creative Movement Workshops which offered an innovative approach to self-expression and self-understanding through movement. Joan was also a strong advocate for women's rights and lectured nationally on women's issues. While in Oneonta she founded the Klipnockie Field Hockey Association and served as its president for several years. Joan played field hockey and was on national and US Mid-East touring teams playing the halfback position. In 1967 she was an All-Star Selection. Joan retired from the university in 1991.
Joan had a love of adventure and a zest for life as evident from her varied hobbies and interests. She enjoyed watching and participating in numerous sports. She competed in national regattas for kayak competitions. She competed in golf tournaments and playing softball. She loved to travel. She enjoyed being outdoors hiking and exploring new places. She enjoyed riding motorcycles. She had a passion for animals and raised cats and a variety of dogs, such as Boxers, German Shepherds, and even a St. Bernard. Later in life she got interested in birds and raised a variety of exotic birds. She invested in the stock market as a hobby. She was also a rated local official for women's field hockey and a national basketball official. Joan began playing competitive tennis in her mid 30's and was an active member of the United States Tennis Association up until her passing.
Joan and Bonnye moved to San Antonio, TX in 1993. She was a member of the Windcrest Tennis Club and the National Senior Women's Tennis Association. She competed on teams, played doubles, and singles matches. She was active in several senior tennis programs in the San Antonio area. She competed in Texas and in National tournaments throughout the US and was highly ranked in each age group in which she competed in Texas and on the national level. She also provided tennis lessons and inspired others to love the sport. Joan was a member of Coker United Methodist Church and served as a Stephen Minister and was
active in the adult Sunday school program.
Joan will be remembered for her enthusiasm for life, her graciousness, loyalty to family, and wonderful sense of humor. She was a spiritual person who inspired others with her faith. Joan was a person who cared deeply about others, from her high school students, college students, and adults, she was always there to encourage, support, and assist so they could achieve the very best for themselves.
Joan was preceded in death by her parents, Chauncey Frank Kingsley and Marion Etter Morf Kingsley. She is survived by her life partner, Bonnye Bond; her son, Thomas William Kingsley of Oneonta, NY; her sister, Diane Kingsley Vanderland of Temple, TX; her nephew, William Sidney Vanderland of Midland, TX; her nieces, Sandra Louise Hudson of Harker Heights, TX and Marian Alice Lowther of Seminole, FL; 7 grand nephews and nieces; and 5 great grand nephews and niece.
