Joan grew up in San Antonio where she attended and graduated from Sam Houston High School. She continued her education by earning a degree from Texas A&I University, where she met her future husband, Tony Petri. On January 30, 1965, Joan married Tony, beginning a partnership of 61 years built on family. Joan raised her three daughters to be steadfast in their beliefs, pointing them towards truth to help them develop independent minds and strong voices.
Joan loved her sons-in-law as though they were her own. They all called her Mom because that is exactly what she was to them.
To her seven grandchildren she was Grandmother. She was always ready to play a game with them and treated them with her M&M and sugar cookies, Swedish roll-ups and her legendary meat loaf. She attended their sports and school events beaming with pride at their performances, games and meets.
She enjoyed traveling and loved going to the beach, planning many family trips to Port Aransas. She enjoyed watching Hallmark movies and listening to CDs of hymns. You could count on Joan for birthday and holiday cards, and promptly sent thank-you notes.
Joan’s faith was not quiet. She spent years in Bible Study Fellowship and other Bible studies, rooting herself in scripture. She answered a calling at Shearer Hills Baptist Church, where she ran the prayer chapel, interceding for others with the conviction that prayer works. She prayed without ceasing and many called her a prayer warrior.
In her final months, Joan received compassionate care from her oncologist, Dr. Krishna Alluri, the staff at Sage Park Assisted Living and Gentiva Hospice. Their kindness was a gift and the family is grateful. She faced her illness with the same faith she had carried throughout her life trusting the promise of what was to come.
She is preceded in death by her mother, Virginia Hering, her father, Arlon Hering and her stepmother, Geneva Hering.
She is survived by her husband Tony Petri; her daughters and sons-in-law, Jill Petri and Gervais Adams, Amy and Aaron Tate, and Julie and Andy Post; her grandchildren, Christopher, Camille and Caroline Adams, Jacob and Zander Tate, and Tyler and Ryan Post; as well as beloved nieces, nephews and countless cousins.
We will celebrate Joan’s life and faith at 11:30 a.m. Friday, May 8, 2026, at Shearer Hills Baptist Church with a reception to follow.
While flowers are appreciated, the family invites those who wish to honor Joan’s memory to consider a donation to Shearer Hills Baptist Church in San Antonio, Texas.
