She attended St. Henry's Elementary and high school and Our Lady of the Lake University, graduating in 1952. That same year she began her 36 year career in education with San Antonio Independent School District. For 25 of those years she was principal of Kelly, Douglas and Bowden Elementary Schools.
Following her retirement in 1989 she worked for the Catholic Chancery Office until 2006.
After that retirement, she dedicated her life to volunteering for many organizations. She taught children with disabilities and challenges at St. Henry's Catholic Church, and volunteered at the Christus Santa Rosa Hospital. She was an active and devoted parishioner of St. Matthews Catholic Church, serving on the Pastoral Council, the St. Vincent de Paul Society, was a member of the choir, the Altar Society, and was a Eucharistic Minister and Lector.
Joan will be missed by her extended family, her many friends, and her sisters of the Kappa Sigma Phi Sorority. Special thanks go to Joice Wilborn and Suzanne Stampley for their loving care of Joan during her last year of illness.
