Joan F. Schaefer

Born on March 8, 1954, in San Antonio, Joan lived a life defined by independence, dedication, and quiet strength. She attended Providence High School, where she was a cheerleader for neighboring Central Catholic High School — an early reflection of the energy, confidence, and vibrant spirit she carried throughout her life.

Joan was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert “Herb” Schaefer, who passed in 2009. Together they shared a beautiful life filled with devotion and adventure, traveling the world from African safaris to cherished fishing trips along the coast.

She was also preceded in death by her parents, Mario R. Calderon and Dolores Calderon.

Joan built a career defined by loyalty and service, dedicating over 35 years to the county courthouse, where she earned the deep respect of colleagues and formed lasting friendships. Alongside her public service, she spent more than three decades teaching Jazzercise — dancing, moving, and bringing joy, confidence, and community into the lives of countless individuals. Dance was not simply something she did; it was part of who she was.

Family was the center of Joan’s world. To her daughter, she was a constant presence — a source of unwavering support, encouragement, and love. She celebrated life’s victories, provided strength in difficult moments, and never let those she loved forget their worth.

One of Joan’s greatest joys was becoming a grandmother. Known affectionately as “Cha Cha,” a name lovingly given to her by her grandson Wyatt, she embraced the role with pride and boundless love. Her grandchildren knew without question how deeply they were cherished.

Joan found beauty in simple things, especially butterflies — mariposas — whose lightness and grace reflected her own spirit.

Above all, Joan treasured her family and the deep bonds she shared with them. She is survived by her devoted daughter, Robynne Paugh; her beloved grandchildren, Wyatt Paugh and Xayne Paugh; her son-in-law, John Paugh; her siblings, Steve Calderon (Celina), Dolores “Lolly” Saindon (Steve), David Calderon (Paola) Carolyn Riley (Chuck), and Gerard Calderon (Elizabeth).

Joan will be remembered for her strength, her steadiness, and the love she gave so freely. Her legacy lives on in the family she nurtured, the lives she uplifted, and the example she set — to work hard, love deeply, and show up for the people who matter most.

A visitation will be held on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, at 6:00 p.m. at Porter Loring Mortuary North 2102 North Loop 1604 East San Antonio, Texas followed by a rosary.

Committal will be held on Wednesday, February 18, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Holy Cross Mausoleum Chapel 17501 Nacogdoches Rd, San Antonio, Texas 78266 followed by the interment.
