On June 18th, 2026, Joan Reineke Schmidt, 98, surrounded by her family, peacefully entered into Glory. We are so thankful for her grace, her beauty inside and out, and most of all for her love. Our family is comforted by the understanding of eternity and her rightful place with Jesus. Her faith never wavered and she was always a shining example for her entire family.
Joan was born March 27th, 1928, in Kansas City, Kansas to R.W. and Mary Olive Reineke. She earned her bachelor’s degree in journalism from TCU where she met the love of her life, Gene Schmidt. They were married for 56 years, calling Fort Worth their home where they raised their three children. After the birth of their first grandchild, they relocated to San Antonio in 1988.
Her life was defined by her devotion to Jesus; no more evident than the way she and Gene raised their three children. Family was always at the center of her life, and her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren brought her immense joy. She faithfully served the Lord with her involvement in Agape Ministries, CAM, Lunch Bunch, BSF, and her cherished Wednesday morning Bible study. Joan was a faithful member of Alamo Heights Methodist Church and St. Andrews Church and School.
Joan was preceded in death by her husband, Gene Schmidt; her brother, George B. Reineke; parents, R.W. Reineke and Mary Olive Reineke; sister and brother-in-law, Mary Jane and Bill Spears. She is survived by her daughter, Susan Gaines (John) of San Antonio; son, Peter Schmidt (Mary Ellen) of Austin; and son, David Schmidt (Julie) of Austin. She is survived by her grandchildren, Kaki Gaines, Sarah Bartlett, Caroline Behrens, Clay Schmidt, Walker Schmidt, Meredith Schmidt, and Cooper Schmidt. She is also survived by six great-grandchildren and numerous cherished nieces and nephews.
A loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister and aunt, Joan is beloved by all and will be dearly missed.
A graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, 1520 Harry Wurzbach Rd.
Her celebration of life will be held at St. Andrews Church and School at 11AM on Wednesday, June 24th, 2026. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made out to The Agape Ministry and St. Andrews Church and School.
