Joan grew up in El Paso, along with her older brother, Junior, and a menagerie of pets. In 1949 she graduated from Texas Western College (now UTEP) with a Bachelor of Arts degree. She became a teacher and taught elementary school until she met and married U.S. Army Officer Herbert (Herb) L. Hoot, Jr. in 1950. They spent the next 27 years moving from one military posting to another, both in the US and Europe, having two children along the way. Upon Herb's retirement in 1977, they settled in McAllen, Texas, where they both became involved in the citrus industry and attended Pan American University, with Joan getting a Master of Fine Arts degree. They took many trips travelling the world.
When Herb passed away in 1997, Joan moved to the Army Residence Community in San Antonio, Texas, where she met, and in 2001 married, Col(R) Norman (Stan) T. Stanfield. They spent their years together traveling until he passed in 2017. A few years later Joan moved back to the Lower Rio Grande Valley to live out the rest of her days.
Being a military wife, Joan was fortunate to have had the opportunity to live and travel the world. It was her passion. She visited and experienced hundreds of fascinating places during her lifetime. Throughout her life she explored several facets of arts and crafts ranging from painting, ceramics, and jewelry to caning, upholstery, and rug making.
Joan is survived by her son, Leslie Hoot (Kim); daughter, Karin Hoot; niece, Rebecca Heinkel; granddaughter: Leisha; and five great grandchildren. Stepchildren, Ted Stanfield (Kap) and Jim Stanfield (Mavis), and 4 grandchildren. Honorary children Jim and Patricia Ford, their son Nick (Rocio) and their 3 children.
Final arrangements will be through Porter Loring Mortuary in San Antonio, Texas. Joan will be cremated, and her ashes are to be interred with her first husband, Herb.
