Born in Topeka, Kansas, May 21, 1926, to Albert and Bertha Silk, Joan overcame polio in her youth to become an accomplished gymnast and dancer.
An excellent student, she attended the University of Michigan, the University of Texas at Austin, and Central Texas College. A natural teacher, she taught her sons math and how to read and write well before they entered kindergarten. She was very active in her sons' school programs, and was named Mother of the Year in 1959 in Killeen, Texas.
Joan's interests were many, and there were few things she could not master. She was an accomplished bridge player, Toastmaster, and artist. She could still do the splits at an age when most women would not consider trying it.
She was known as someone who always came to the aid of others, whether it was taking them to the doctor if they didn't have a ride or moving their kids into our home so friends could stay with each other at the hospital in a crisis. She made food for aid workers after tornados and helped gather goods to send to the troops overseas.
Joan was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers Barrett and Eugene, and her husband of fifty-eight years, Stanley Weiss.
She is survived by her sons, Alan and Mark and Mark's wife Janet, grandchildren Benjamin, Brendan, Spencer, and Jesse and Jesse's wife Meredith, great grandchildren Zachary and Vivian, cousin, Phyllis Weinstein, and numerous nephews and nieces.
