

Joanne Cockrell, 81, being the strong and loving woman she was, passed from this world on September 24, 2024 at Dell-Seton Hospital in Austn, TX. Alice Joanne Cockrell was born at home in Smithville, TX on May 26, 1943 to Joseph Albert Cockrell Sr and Alice Mae Wooldridge
Joanne graduated as salutatorian from Smithville High School and was active in basketball, band and many other school activities. After graduation, she attended Our Lady of the Lake University and graduated with a BA degree in 1965. She would later graduate from the University of Texas with a Master’s degree in education.
She started teaching in the San Antonio Ind. Schools at the middle school level and advancing to administration. She taught at many SAISD schools and respected and loved the students, tending to their needs, inspiring them to pursue their hopes and dreams. Joanne was the first woman to be promoted to high school principal in the SAISD at Fox Tech and later at Thomas Jefferson High School.
Joanne is preceded by her parents, grandparents, Edward Baker, Patricia Lopez and other cherished friends and family.
She leaves, to mourn her loss, her partner, Debra Thornton and her brothers, Joseph Cockrell, Jr (Donna), Bill Cockrell and John Michael Cockrell (Robyn). Also, a legacy of nieces and nephews and their children, godchildren, and many close and very special friends.
