

Joanne Robertson Matthews, age 85, of San Antonio, died Sunday, December 9, 2012. She was born to Josephine Crow and Hugh Robertson in Arkadelphia, Arkansas, on December 29, 1926. They moved to San Benito, Texas, in 1930 when Dr. Robertson became pastor of the First Presbyterian Church. She graduated from San Benito High School in 1944 and moved to San Antonio that year.
Josephine graduated from the University of Texas with a degree in Elementary Education. She taught school in Corpus Christi for three years and continued to teach for Alamo Heights I.S.D in 1953. She married Dr. Mason L. Matthews Jr. on November 28, 1953. They have three wonderful children. In 1977, she returned to teach fifth grade at Cambridge. She retired in 1987 but continued to substitute for many years. Joanne was an active member of Alamo Heights Presbyterian Church since June 1944. She served on the Session and taught Sunday School and Bible School for many years.
She was also active in the Presbyterian Women, serving as a Bible Moderator and as President. She was president of Delta Delta Delta Alumnae and active in its work. She also served as president of the Bexar County Veterinary Auxiliary and of the Alamo Heights Schools Retired Personnel. Joanne enjoyed life. She loved to read, travel, visit family and friends. She was so proud of her children and grandchildren. Each child, including her students were very special to her.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years.
She is survived by her children, Dr. Hugh and Nell Matthews of Gettysburg, PA, Mason and Patty Matthews of San Antonio, TX, and Betsy and John Akins of Folsom, CA.; grandchildren, Mason and Miles Matthews of San Antonio, TX, Matthew, Adam, and Patrick Akins of Folsom, CA., and Kate, Will and Ann Matthews of Gettysburg, PA.; brother, The Rev. E.D. Robertson and wife, Joyce; Sisters-in-law, Mrs. J.N. (Elizabeth) Boehme and Mrs. D.P. (Margaret) Bolton; well-loved nieces and nephews.
