

Mrs. Summitt was born in Estherville, IA on September 11, 1941. She graduated from Gruver High School in 1959 and Methodist-Kahler School of Nursing, in Rochester, MN in 1962. She was then commissioned a second lieutenant in the Nurse Corps of the United States Air Force and was assigned as a flight nurse to the hospital at Brookley AFB in Mobile, AL.
At Brookley, she met and married 2nd Lt. James B. Jim Summitt, and they were assigned to South Ruislip Air Base in London, England for three years. She was discharged from the Air Force as a Captain shortly before the birth of their son, James B., Jr., in 1967. After Jim was discharged from the Air Force in 1968, she worked as a nurse in Memphis, TN to put Jim through dental school. In 1972, he re-entered the Air Force, and they had assignments in New Mexico and Texas, moving to San Antonio in 1980.
She worked as a nurse at San Antonio Community Hospital and Southwest Texas Methodist Hospital. After Jim retired from the Air Force, they continued to make their home in San Antonio.
She is preceded in death by her father, James Clark Hartman.
She is survived by her husband; their daughter, Carrie Ruth Summitt; their son and daughter-in-law, James B. Summitt, Jr. J.B. and Minna Lee; their grandson, William Summitt; her mother, Alta Hartman; and sister and brother-in-law, Marilyn and Darvin Schnell of Estherville; sister-in-law, Joyce Sharp Summitt of Memphis; nieces, Londa Schnell Israel of Lawrence, KS, Darci Schnell Borlin of Stevensville, MI, and Tara Schnell Pyawasit of Estherville, Kelly Summitt Pridgen of Tuscaloosa, AL; nephews, Dr. Robert L. Summitt, Jr., of Memphis, and Dr. John Blair Summitt of Nashville, TN; and aunts, Alice Hartman and Rosemary Hartman of Estherville.
The family wishes to express appreciation for the excellent care provided by VistaCare Hospice and especially to Maria Pappalardo for taking such outstanding and loving care of her.
Memorial contributions may be made to San Pedro Presbyterian Church or to the Joanne Summitt Scholarship Fund, UTHSCSA Dental School.
