Joe served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He retired from Kelly field in 1972 and moved to his ranch in Medina County.
Joe was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Irma, and all of his brothers and sister.
He is survived by his son, David Dickson and wife, Paula; daughter Anne Harris and husband, John of San Antonio; grandchildren Christopher Dickson of Fairfax, VA, Deborah Bolado of San Antonio, Rebecca Mulvaney of Alexandria, VA, Amanda Harris of Dallas; four great-grandchildren and longtime caregiver, Florinda Rodriguez.
