Joe Owen

He was preceded in death by his parents Jesse B. and Sara Margaret Maggie Reed, and five brothers, Ray, Loman, Alton, Bob and Leo Owen.

In 1943, Joe married Norma R. Baethge. He served in the U.S. Navy on the USS Eldorado during World War II. After the war, he farmed and ranched with his father in Mathis for several years. For 34 years, Joe was employed by the Southern Farm Bureau Insurance Company, where he was Agency Manager first for Jackson County, then Parmer County, relocating to Bexar County in 1966. He retired in 1989.

Joe and Norma enjoyed traveling and took many trips over the years. Other pastimes included golf, hunting, ranching, spending time at his home in Fredericksburg and being with his family. Joe has left his family a wonderful Christian heritage. He served as a deacon in the Bethany Primitive Baptist Church. Joe loved people and was loved by many, and quickly turned a stranger into a friend.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Norma; two children, Carol Jo Martin and husband W. T. Martin Jr. of Carlsbad, NM and Dr. Courtney Owen and wife Pat of San Antonio, TX; eight grandchildren: Dara Jo Allen and husband Greg, Jennifer Jo Dugan and husband Ken, Lane Martin and wife Brittany, Shelley Miller and husband Jason, Tiffany Stark and husband Ryan, Dr. Chad Owen and wife Jennifer, Luke Owen and Brett Owen; six great grandchildren; one brother, J. B. Owen Jr. of Waco, Texas; one sister, Barbara Jean Sunderman of Sinton, Texas; and many friends and relatives.
