John Sidney Ballard, Jr.

He was born in Chicago, Illinois on February 23, 1914, the son of John Sidney Ballard and Frances Bailey Wilson.

Moving to San Antonio at an early age, he became a long time San Antonio resident. He was a 1933 graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School.

For several years, John was employed by Noah Spears Medical Supply until he began his own business, Ballard Surgical Supply on San Pedro Ave. He developed a loyal customer base which became long time friends as well as clients.

John was a life-long, devout member of Beacon Hill Presbyterian Church and a founding member of the Victory Class.

He enjoyed being around good company and fine dining. His passions included a great game of golf, a love of travel and an affinity for cars.

On December 12, 1940, he married Mary Eloise Gragg, to whom he shared 48 wonderful years of marriage until her death in January 31, 1989. On June 19, 1993, he married Gladys Jeanne Hancock, to whom he remained married for 16 years until her death on February 27, 2009.

John is survived by his children, Dr. John S. Ballard, III and wife, Patricia of Christoval, TX; Richard E. Ballard of San Antonio, TX and Barbara Oswalt and husband, Mike of Katy, TX; Jeanne's children: Rebecca Hicks, John Hancock, Kathleen Mendez, and granddaughter Nicole Timms; his four grandchildren: Tracy Ballard of Dallas; Kimberly Ray and husband, Greg of Georgetown, TX; John-Michael Oswalt of Houston, and Trent Oswalt of Katy; three great-grandchildren: Stirling Burnet, Miles Ray and Havana Ray, all of Georgetown; numerous loving nieces and nephews; and many wonderful friends and neighbors.

The family wishes to express their gratitude and sincere appreciation to Hamilton House of San Antonio, Grace Care Center of Katy and Resolutions Hospice of Katy for their kind care and compassion extended to our father.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, June 10th from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at Porter Loring on McCullough.

Pallbearers include: John-Michael Oswalt, Trent Oswalt, Roy Riner, Bob Ratliff, Jim Ratliff, and Jimmy Jones.
