John Philip Dobbs, loving husband, father, grandfather, entered fully to be into the presence of the Lord on Monday, November 13, 2023, in San Antonio, Texas. John was born on February 1, 1938, in Kankakee, Illinois, to parents, Charlotte and Victor Dobbs, and raised in San Antonio, TX. He attended St. Gerard’s Elementary School and graduated from Central Catholic High School in 1956. John was a man of many talents, interests and lived his life with integrity. He believed integrity is shown by what one does on the golf course when no one is looking. He was a scratch golfer, rarely needing a mulligan on the course or in life. He was known for his quiet wisdom, gentle guidance and unfailing love. He started working as a young boy as a caddy at Brackenridge Golf Course and loved using the tips to get bean rolls from Teka Molina. John was a talented craftsman in several media, including wood work and stained glass.
John loved hosting family get togethers. He, along with Dorothy, entertained family and friends at their home during Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter, along with many spontaneous backyard events throughout the year. He was known as “Brisket Man” to family pets because they knew they could always get a sample from John. His smoked turkey was a crowd pleaser.
He started out as a journeyman heating and air-conditioning contractor as a young man and opened his own company in 1981. He was the owner and operator of Southwestern Air Heating and Air Conditioning for twenty-one years. He was very well known for his generosity and service to the community; providing service free of charge and even accepting payment in a bag of grapefruit by Nuns.
John was a devout Catholic his entire life, devoted to prayer. He had a love of nature, acting as a steward and protector of nature in numerous ways, constructing bird houses, a compost pit and maintaining gardens.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Charlotte, father, Victor Dobbs and brothers Ken, Victor, Fred and Tom. John is survived by his wife of 43 years, Dorothy Dobbs; son, Philip; daughter, Jennifer Smith (Stuart), grandsons Alex (Maggie) and Aaron; and Karen Petrucci (Philip), granddaughter Kaitlynne (Jonathon) Windmiller and grandsons Colton and Spencer; and many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive guests beginning at 6:00 pm on Tuesday, November 21, 2023, at Porter Loring Mortuary.
