Happy trails my friend. Prayers and blessing to your family.

I'm now told you have left us, my Friend. You're gone. And, instantly, the Light became a bit dimmer in my World. It will be a while before I fully realize this. 

John Edward and I, joined up, on this long, winding Trail called Life, in the Summer of 1967. He was, at the time, a skinny but tight-framed Kid from San Antonio, I met in College Station, Texas,... and over time, he became somewhat of a Universal Man. We were High School Hairy's, who became fish Buds, Class of '71 Aggie Pals, during the Vietnam War years, ... then we were College Grads , and Army Officers, ... then Career types, (him, Newspapers, me, Business), ... then Married Guys, and Fathers,.. and then, the inevitable Retirement years, with Grand-Kids. We transitioned to the looking-back stage, the countless hours, of reminiscing about it all. Especially the time we spent at A&M in the Cadet Corps. The Old Corps. 

We first met at Summer Freshman Orientation, just prior to an incredibly tough first year at Texas A&M. He was my room-mate at this session, and we decided to join the same Army ROTC Outfit in the Corps. When we rotated to the Desk, where we had to decide, we told the Bull, the Officer, you pick one for us,... and he recommended one called D-2. That was, as it turned out, an outstanding choice. We shared a fish year (nine months) that was grueling, that ran off half of the guys we started with, in Sept. of 1967. Only 11 or so of us in that group got our Senior Boots and graduated four years later. We were Blood Brothers. 

Johnny was a maverick, and a huge Bob Dylan fan. In school, he was always the first Guy to get the latest Beatles Album. He didn't mind putting on an Orange T.U. t-shirt now and then, at Aggieland. He and I were ready for any kind of good-bull prank, or detail, at any time. Thanks in large part to John, the Class of '71 D-2 Guys had some great Reunions each year, at Texas A&M, from 2002 to 2010 or so. He was our spark-plug, our coordinator. We will always be thankful to him for that. 

Johnny enjoyed his work at the Wall Street Journal, Houston Post, etc,.. he adored his two Grand-Sons, and his Son, Jason, ... he was an avid collector of Books, Music, Pottery, Posters, etc. He was proud of his Texas Family heritage, (a few being frontier Texas Rangers), his Jewish heritage and his ability to be a good investigative Journalist and, at other times, an Editor. 

He and I chatted a lot over the years about history, movies, the military, and always, always,.. the Old Days. We were political opposites, and we constantly ragged each other about same. (It always ended well.) John Edward became, it seems, part of my Family, as we grew older, and our Kids grew older. 

fish Edmiston, ... my A&M fish Buddy, my Amigo, my Compadre, my Pal,... to say I will miss you dearly, does not come close to saying what I feel now. I am thankful for your Friendship over so many years.

John was a co-worker and beloved friend to so many of us.

I am so sorry to hear of the death of John. He and I had been dear friends since 1974. Compassionate, intelligent and fun,if he was your friend, you were blessed. How he loved Bob Dylan and Maggie's Farm. God Bless you, John, and your family.
