John Edward Ferguson, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away on Sunday, July 14, 2024, at the age of 72. Born on August 23, 1951, in Georgetown, TX, to James Edward Ferguson and Dorothy Lee (Marshall) Ferguson. John lived a life marked by dedication, service, and love.
John attended Crocket High School in Austin, TX, and went on to graduate from Southwest Texas State University in 1975. Following his education, he served honorably in the United States Marine Corps, exemplifying courage, and commitment. After his military training he then attended QASAS training, from there John embarked on a remarkable 42- year career with the Department of Defense, working tirelessly in various capacities. His assignments took him to Panama, Germany, and numerous locations across the United States and the world, with his final post at Camp Stanley before retiring in 2022.
John was a man of many passions. He found immense joy in fishing, often seen wearing his favorite fishing shirts, ready for his next adventure. He enjoyed trips to the TX coast to fish at his favorite fishing spot, where he felt at peace and in his element. He cherished the quiet moments spent waiting for a bite and the thrill of reeling in a catch. He was always eager to share his latest fishing tales with family and friends. He took joy in teaching his grandchildren how to fish, play pool and poker, leaving them with the knowledge of his favorite games. He loved traveling and taking trips to the casino, he was an avid dancer and cherished the moments spent on the dance floor with his wife, Gloria. Above all, John treasured the time he spent with his grandchildren, creating countless memories filled with laughter and love. John was known to his grandchildren as Papi and Papaw, he was known best to his friends as BIG JOHN. Known for his exceptional BBQ, often cooked with “stolen” wood from his brother- in-law George. Johns’ culinary skills brought family and friends together, sharing the warmth of his hospitality. He loved taking the time to make Gloria her favorite chocolate cake, and he also made the best chocolate chip cookies for the family, and much to his delight they were gone or hidden away before dinner time.
John is preceded in death by his parents, brother-in-law George Moff, and grandson Lincoln Duarte. He is survived by his loving wife of 12 years Gloria Ferguson; children: John Ferguson Jr., Jessica Lynn Myers (Rich), Inez Marie Martinez (Joe), Alex Duarte, Jacob Duarte; sister Donna Faye Moff; grandchildren: John, Ian, Matthew, Ryan, Rachel, Elijah, Violet, Mia, Alexa, Alayna, Gio, Alec, Damian, Benjamin, Ellie, Elias, and many other extended family members, good friends and his little buddy Rooster(dog) that he took joy in spending time and playing with.
His unwavering love for God, family and friends was evident in every aspect of his life. Johns’ generosity, kindness, and humor touched the lives of all who knew him. John was the most kind-hearted man and friend to all. He will be greatly missed by his loving family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
