Raised in San Antonio, TX, John grew up on El Medano Street where days were spent outside with the neighborhood gang until the streetlights came on. Some of the most memorable summers were spent traveling with his siblings and grandparents wearing handmade jammer shorts and enjoying hot summer days swimming in the pool. John graduated from James Madison High School in 1991 where he befriended many in those halls and shared cherished memories with the lifelong friends he made. After graduation John sought a career in sales and was successful in any position he pursued. He sure had a way with words and the family would often joke saying John could sell a refrigerator to an Eskimo in the arctic if he wanted to.
John had a great sense of humor and was quite the charmer. He was a stranger to no one and had a love and heart for helping others in need. Whether you were blood, a childhood friend or someone he just met, all you had to do was say the word and he was there to lend a
helping hand. The “give the shirt off his back” kind of guy with an overall zeal for life in serving others.
John had an infectious smile, one that truly lit up the room. He was handsome, witty, most intelligent, and boy did he like to make people laugh and play practical jokes. John was proud of his Italian heritage, enjoyed hitting the gym for a good workout, cooking up delicious meals and rooting for his favorite sports team the San Antonio Spurs. He loved animals and they loved him too. In John’s journey to recovery, he developed a passion to serve others in their journey too. He shared in their struggles through his experiences and was firm but fair with them. He had a “no-nonsense tell it like it is”
perspective that led many to recovery and saved lives. John was a loving and caring son, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend. He loved his family dearly and was deeply loved by many.
John is preceded in death by his grandparents, Sylvester J. Garbo, Katheryn Garbo, Dominic Gallo, Alice Gallo, and Uncle Frank Garbo.
He is survived by his father John S. Garbo and wife Nikki Garbo, his mother Betty J. White and husband Randy White, his brother Anthony J. Garbo and wife Misty Garbo, his sister Kari M.
