
He was the first of 7 children to enter military service, joining shortly after Pearl Harbor. He received the Soldier's Medal in New Guinea for saving the life of a pilot by cutting him from a burning plane.
He was totally family oriented and very close to all of his nieces and nephews.
He spent most of his life in New Jersey, except for the last 8 years in San Antonio, where he was a member of Christ Presbyterian Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Nicholas Girgus and Mary Ksenia Girgus; and siblings, Nicholas Girgus, Joseph Girgus, Arthur Girgus, Mary Girgus, Andrew, Girgus and Paul Girgus.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Edith Girgus; sister, Helen Newsom, both of San Antonio; brothers, Michael Girgus and wife, Rhoda of Clark, NJ, Peter Girgus and Samuel Girgus and wife, Sue, all of San Antonio. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews in New Jersey, Maine, Virginia, Florida, Texas, Maryland, Massachusetts and New Hampshire. John is also survived by his in-laws, Carol Girgus of New Jersey, Esther Simpson, Mabel Stinemire and Joseph Mason, all of Florida. They all loved him dearly.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Christ Presbyterian Church, 5440 Vance Jackson, San Antonio, TX 78230.
