John was born to Jack Vernon Gunderson and Janette Carol Gunderson (nee Fouser) on July 20, 1955, in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. He graduated from Chippewa High School in 1973 and joined the United States Coast Guard, eventually stationed in San Antonio, TX as station keeper for USCG reserve units. During his assignment in San Antonio, he met and married the love of his life, Naomi Palacios-Gunderson in 1977. At that time, he made the decision to convert his military status to reserve status, while he and Naomi built a life filled with love, laughter, family, and adventure in San Antonio, Texas. Together they raised three children and created countless memories through their travels and shared experiences; while raising their family. He also began his 38 year career working in civil service working at Ft Sam, Randolph, and spent the majority of his career at Lackland AFB. He was known for his strong work ethic, dedication, and steady presence. In addition, he studied at St Phillips College. He dutifully served in the USCG reserve for 31 years plus 4 years active, and was activated various times to work during natural disasters in CA, LA, TX, Desert Storm, and 9/11.
John enjoyed running marathons and was a member of the Texas Beef Council Running Team. He and Naomi enjoyed numerous “runcations” throughout the US and Canada. Summers were spent camping and enjoying the outdoors with their children and later, their grandchildren.
After retirement he and Naomi became avid cruisers. They traveled to Alaska, Hawaii, Canada, the Caribbean, Mexico, Central America, Europe, Australia, the Arctic Circle, Scandinavia, and South America. They were always looking forward to discovering new places and making new memories with family along the way. Whether traveling, attending family gatherings, or simply spending time together, John cherished every moment with those he loved most.
Above all else, John treasured his family. He deeply loved his grandchildren and rarely missed an opportunity to attend activities and special events. His family will forever remember his fun-loving personality, quick wit, and ability to bring laughter to any situation. John had a gift for making people feel welcome, comfortable, cared for, and for his legendary sense of humor that left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 49 years Naomi Palacios-Gunderson; his children and family: son John Lyle Gunderson and wife Stacy Gunderson, and their children Kenneth, Chloe, and John Kyle; Emily Gunderson and her daughter Abby Gunderson; daughter Leticia Bahr and husband Joshua Bahr, and their children Castiel and Dorian; his faithful four-legged companion, Frenchie; and his sisters, Vicki Beaudette, Judy Taylor, and Jean Johnson.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Janette Gunderson.
A service will be held on June 8, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Sunset Northwest Funeral Home, with a reception to follow. Commander Tony Fuentes will officiate the ceremony at the funeral home, and Lt. Bill Martin will officiate the ceremony at Ft. Sam Houston.
John’s legacy of love, laughter, service, and devotion to family will continue to live on in all who knew and loved him.
