
Dr. John M. Herring, a 40 year resident of San Antonio, Texas passed away Sunday, February 10, 2008 at the age of 85.
The son of the late Richard E. and Leota Webb Herring, John was born September 2, 1922 in Nashville, Tennessee. He entered Vanderbilt University in 1940 to pursue a degree in Engineering.
During this time, he chose to serve his country by proudly enlisting in the Air Force. He was deployed to the South Pacific and returned to reenter and graduate from Vanderbilt University in 1947.
He felt his calling to be in medicine, like his father, and entered the Medical School at the University of Tennessee, graduating in 1953 specializing in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
In 1968, he moved his family from Richmond, Virginia to San Antonio where he joined the Faculty of the University of Texas Health Science Center. In his spare time, he enjoyed listening to jazz, painting and traveling with his family across the United States and abroad.
He retired from the University of Texas Health Science Center in 1987. John was preceded in death by his parents and son, Richard E. Herring.
He leaves behind to cherish his memory, his loving wife of 52 years, Christina M. Herring; his daughter, Lisa Herring Kouns and husband, Brian and their daughters, Lauren and Jordan; his daughter-in-law, Melissa S. Herring and her children, Marshall and Rachel.
Dr. Herring will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
