

On September 4, 2016, John Sealy Jockusch entered eternal life. John was born in Galveston, Texas, on September 19, 1917. He is predeceased by his parents Julius W. Jockusch and Hetta Groos Jockusch, by his wife Virginia Sue Pugh Jockusch, by his brothers, Julius, Adolph and Carl, by a sister, Hetta Jockusch Towler and a son, William. He is survived by his son John and wife Kimberly. He is also survived by his grandchildren Shealyn Jockusch Buist and husband Ashley, Jennifer Jockusch Pederson and husband Scott, John Jockusch III and wife Sabrina, and Julius Jockusch. His great-grandchildren are Kiersa and Kaleb Buist, Casey and Ty Pederson, and John IV and Adam Jockusch.
John graduated from high school at the age of 15. He attended Rice University and served five years in the Army, attaining the rank of Major before his separation. In 1942, while stationed at Will Rogers Field, John met his future wife, Virginia Sue Pugh. After an eight month
courtship they married on August 15, 1943. Upon separation from the service they moved to John's hometown of Galveston, living there for two years before moving to San Antonio (in a blizzard) on January 1, 1947.
John joined the investment firm, Dittmar & Co (now Morgan Stanley) in 1950. He remained employed there until 2010 when he retired at the age of 93.
John, a true gentleman, loved by all who met him, was also a great civic leader. He was active in the creation of United Way of Texas. He was a lifetime member of their Board of Trustees and served in many capacities, including president. He was a lifetime member of the Advisory Board of the Salvation Army and served two years as chairman. He was the recipient of the Kiwanis Club Walter McAllister Sr. Award for Community Service (2000), The Salvation Army, San Antonio Command, William Booth Award (2000) and the Exchange Club of San Antonio Golden Deeds Award (1997).
John was also actively involved with the National Council on Alcoholism, San Antonio Chamber of Commerce, Rice University alumni affairs, the Symphony Society of San Antonio, San Antonio Community Radio Corp, Friends of Trinity University, San Antonio Livestock Exposition, Better Business Bureau of San Antonio and University of Texas, San Antonio.
John was a member of Conopus Club, Exchange Club, Order of the Alamo, San Antonio Country Club, Los Alegradores, and Sons of the Republic of Texas.
John was a lifelong Episcopalian and was active with St. David's Episcopal Church since its inception. He worked on various church committees, was active as a lay reader, and conducted Sunday services at the Mission Road Development Center for more than fifty years. He was a great supporter of the Episcopal Theological Seminary of the Southwest from which he received an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters in 2014.
John lived his life in way that exemplifies all that is good. He will be deeply missed.
