John attended St Pius X grade school and Central Catholic High School. He earned a BA in History from The University of Texas, Austin and Doctorate in Medicine from The University of Texas Health Science Center School of Medicine at San Antonio.
As a medical researcher with experience in teaching (also having taught for a time within the Catholic school system in San Antonio), John had a gift in communicating with students, patients, doctors, researchers and policy makers. He was a kind and supportive educator and friend to countless people.
Professionally, as a Peer Specialist, John dedicated himself to educating fellow physicians throughout the state. As an employee of the Texas Tech University Health Science Center at El Paso, John taught the use of recovery techniques alongside traditional treatments of mental illness in order to give patients as much independence and fullness of life as possible. John, again as a Peer Specialist, worked with his alma mater, The University of Texas Health Science Center School of Medicine at San Antonio serving patients who were in recovery.
During the past several years, John also served as a valued member of the State of Texas Behavioral Health Advisory Committee at the Health and Human Services Commission. He worked tirelessly to protect the rights of and advocate for those who are most vulnerable in our society.
John volunteered his services as an active member of San Antonio Clubhouse, an organization dedicated to the recovery of men and women with mental illness, providing opportunities to work, and learn, while contributing their talents through a community of mutual support.
John was also a talented musician and member of several bands in San Antonio and Austin. Music was his peace. Sharing his music with others gave him great joy.
John is preceded in death by both of his parents, Maurice Kliewer and Edilia Kliewer. Survivors include brother Maurice Kliewer Jr M.D. of Wichita Ks, niece Elizabeth Kliewer Megee of Wichita Ks, and nephew Christopher Kliewer of Chicago Il.
A Rosary immediately followed by Funeral Mass will be held 10 am on Tuesday May 9, 2017 at St Pius X Catholic Church 3907 Harry Wurzbach Rd, San Antonio, TX 78209.
