John is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Peché, née Bachraty, with whom he built a happy life and home. Alongside Liz, he became a father figure to her children Nicholas, Gabriella, and Jack, and helped guide them through their growth from childhood to adulthood. John witnessed the union of Nick to his partner Erica, who produced his grandson, Mateo. John’s inherent youthfulness was evident in the presence of the child, and it seemed that Mateo recognized a kindred, young spirit when they were together!
John attended Catholic schools for most of his education and played collegiate-level soccer at St. Mary’s University. His passion for the sport was lifelong, and he would spend much time discussing and arguing the game with his best friend, attorney John Paul Bogran.
With much interest, John researched the colorful history of both sides of his family. On his father’s side, he is a direct descendant of José Gregorio Esparza, a defender of the Alamo. On his mother’s side, his ancestors include Santiago Del Valle, after whom the unincorporated community of Del Valle, TX is named.
Throughout his life, John was noted for his highly refined tastes, evident in his certification as a sommelier, and his unique ability to make anything beautiful. Later in life, he became an avid hunter and outdoorsman, reveling in divine providence found in nature.
John is survived by his immediate family: mother, Ofelia; sister, Libby; and brother, Billy and his wife Margaret; nephews Jack and Vincent; along with numerous nieces and nephews from the Bachraty side. He believed that he would again meet his late sister Michelle in the hereafter. John’s life was full, and his positive outlook through both the highs and the challenges is testament to his abundant elegance and style.
