

He was born in Waterloo, Iowa in 1936, and grew up in Virginia, Illinois, and Albuquerque, New Mexico, where he graduated high school and attended the University of New Mexico. He graduated from Trinity University in San Antonio in 1959 and Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary in 1962.
John served Presbyterian pastorates throughout Texas, including Trinity of Palestine, Oak Cliff in Dallas, Trinity of Grand Prairie, First Presbyterian of Harlingen, and St. John's of Houston, where he was named Pastor Emeritus. He served as interim pastor of St. Luke's and St. Paul of Houston, and Faith of Pasadena.
After retirement in 2001 and a move to San Antonio, John served as interim pastor in Uvalde and Leon Springs, and then as parish associate of Holy Trinity and Crestholme of San Antonio, and supply pastor of Los Angeles Heights.
John was recognized by Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary in 1989 for distinguished service and named Pastor of the Year. He was active in the Kairos Prison Ministry in Sugarland and Hondo, Texas. To preach Christ and testify to prisoners was his passion, for John always felt God's spirit speaking especially strong in that ministry.
He is preceded in death by his parents, William and Dulce Anne Shute; sister, Carol Winterbottom, and daughters, Marie Shute and Linda Stainthorpe.
John is survived by his wife of 54 years, Janice Shute; son, Tom Shute and daughter-in-law, Karen; son-in-law, Jerry Stainthorpe; grandchildren, John Villarreal, Katie Shute, Carter Shute and Clara Shute; sisters-in-law, Carol Morrow and Pam Power; brother-in-law, Hank Fuentes; nephews, Steve Winterbottom, Quinn Stowe, Bill Stowe and Adrian Jasso; and niece, Amanda Jasso.
Viewings are scheduled for Tuesday, March 5, 2013 from noon to 9:00 p.m. and Wednesday, March 6, 2013 from noon to 9:00 p.m., with visitation that evening from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Porter Loring on McCullough.
