
John Houston Sowell III passed away on January 10, 2026. He is preceded in death by his parents, John Houston Sowell, Jr. and Virginia Murray Sowell. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Dundee Dudley Fraser Sowell; son, John Houston Sowell, IV and wife Marsha Baxter Sowell; their children, Johnathan Hunter Sowell and Brandon Keith Sowell; son, Daniel Fraser Sowell, and wife Mary Champagne Sowell; their children, Cannon Kade Sowell, and Barrett Thomas Sowell.
John was born on June 19, 1952, at Luke Air Force Base in Phoenix, Arizona. He lived in France until he was two years old and took his first steps on Omaha Beach. He moved back to San Antonio in 1954. He graduated from Alamo Heights High School in 1970, graduated from the University of Texas in 1974 with a bachelor’s degree in business administration, and graduated from Texas Tech Law School with a Doctor of Jurisprudence (JD) with honors in 1978.
He began his career with Exxon in Houston in 1978. He moved back to San Antonio in 1981 to work for Clayton Williams Jr. for thirteen and one-half years as Division Land Manager.
He was a member of the Delta Theta Phi law school fraternity, the State Bar of Texas, American Association of Petroleum Landmen, the San Antonio Association of Landmen, and the San Antonio Bar Association.
John's hobbies were hunting and fishing, especially offshore fishing, and reading.
There will be a graveside service at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, at Sunset Memorial Park and Funeral Home, at 1701 Austin Highway, San Antonio, Texas.
