He was born in Atlanta, Georgia to Sylvia and John.
John was predeceased by his two loving wives and one step-son. He was married to Sophia Mae Hess from 1948 until 1979 and Eleanor Hardwicke Tynan from 1980 until 2008.
John is survived by sons, John W. Steele III and wife, Sue and Charles E. Steele and wife, Elise; five step-daughters and their husbands, one step-son and his wife, four grandchildren, seven step-grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held on Friday, August 10, 2012 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Porter Loring.
