John experienced much hardship and loss during his life but always managed to be helpful and a light to others. When he was one year old, his mother died and his father’s inability to care for him resulted in his placement in Angel of Guardian Orphanage in Chicago, Illinois in 1949. He remained in the orphanage until his senior year of high school and stayed in contact with his fellow classmates throughout his life.
He married Phyllis K. Brantley in 1970 but she died in 1976, leaving behind their 5-year-old son, Marc Thomas. John often said he would never remarry as Phyllis was the love of his life and he held true to that commitment until his death. He is survived by his son Marc and grandson Luke who he loved dearly.
John spent over 20 years in United Staes Air Force, many years working for the Red Cross and another 20 years with Civil Service as a clerk at Fort Sam Medical Center Anesthesia department.
For those that knew him, they knew of his love for animals, strays and other people’s happiness. He was quick to offer help and he could always be counted on to lend a hand. His love for his family, church and Jesus Christ was always evident.
He died with a servant’s heart.
