Born in San Antonio to Mary Fraser Vollmer and John Louis Vollmer, Sr., John remained deeply rooted in the city he loved. There, he built a family, raised three children, pursued his entrepreneurial dreams and became known as a man whose greatest success was measured not by what he achieved but by what he gave.
John graduated from Holy Cross High School in 1961, where he left a lasting football legacy as an All-City and All-District running back wearing jersey #22. The determination and resilience that distinguished him on the field remained as the defining characteristics throughout his life. Those same qualities helped launch his early career supplying Pace Foods with its iconic picante sauce jar and ultimately led him to found Vollmer Products International in 1985, building a business that remains strong today.
His impact on both industry and community was acknowledged through his induction into the Texas Food Processors Association (TFPA) Hall of Fame and by the San Antonio Life Academy (SALA), which honored him for demonstrated leadership and generosity.
John’s true legacy extends far beyond his business accomplishments as a provider to his family and a generous servant to others. One friend summed up his generosity best: “John handed out more fifty-dollar bills than anyone I’ve ever known.” His generosity was not occasional – it was simply who he was.
John is preceded in death by his parents and his brother David Vollmer, Sr.; survived by his wife, Cheryl Vollmer; his children Tammy Vollmer, John Vollmer “Dusty,” Kimberly Vollmer; his siblings, Cynthia Vollmer, Mary Upshaw (Randy), Mark Vollmer Sr., Theresa Rust (Darrel); his granddaughter, Amanda Elliott (Hunter); and many nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews.
