

Johnny Ruiz, 59, passed away on Saturday, January 16, 2021 at University Hospital in San Antonio, TX. He was born on September 9, 1961 at Gorgas Hospital in Panama City, Panama to Pedro and Lillie Mae (Palacios) Ruiz.
After John graduated from West Campus High School in 1980, he pursued a degree in Sociology at UTSA. After graduation, John accepted a job at USAA, which blossomed into a 17 year career in insurance and underwriting. John was a devout Catholic, and his unwavering faith in God led him to become a Director of Religious Education at both Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church and St. John Berchmans Catholic Church. After 10 years of spiritual service, John’s heart led him to care for his parents when his father was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. John’s example of dedication, selflessness, and faith marked him as a saint among his family and life long friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, Pedro Ruiz. John is survived by his son, James Ira Hill, Jr.; his mother, Lillie M. Ruiz; his siblings, Cindy Lopez (Robert), Pedro Ruiz, Jr., Rita Apolinar (Adam), Jacqueline Goede (Raymond), Martin Ruiz, Craig Ruiz (Holly Beth), and Joseph Ruiz (Teresa); and numerous nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Tuesday, February 9, 2021 with a Rosary to begin at 7:00 pm at Porter Loring Mortuary. The funeral mass will be private for family only and livestreamed for those who wish to attend. Fr. Oscar Tello-Curiel and Fr. James Janish will officiate. Interment to follow at First Memorial Park Cemetery in Von Ormy, TX will be open to those who wish to attend in person; our ETA will be 11:30am. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. All services for John were recorded and can be viewed below.
