Col. Jonathan Charles Fruendt MD, U.S. Army (Ret.)

Col. Jonathan Charles Fruendt, MD, U.S. Army (Ret.) passed away on July 17, 2026 in San Antonio, Texas at the age of 73. He was a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, respected physician, faithful servant of his country, and cherished brother and friend.

Jon was born in Watseka, Illinois March 15, 1953 to Pastor and Mrs. Carl Fruendt. He was the youngest of six siblings and grew up on the quiet plains of the Midwest, where he developed the strong faith, work ethic, and humble character that would guide him throughout his life.

Even as a young man, Jon dreamed of seeing the world beyond his small hometown. Rhonda, his high school sweetheart and soulmate, would be by his side and share in every adventure that followed. After practicing medicine for several years and adding Adam and Kelly to their family, in 1985, Jon answered a new calling by joining the United States Army as a physician. For the next thirty years, he faithfully served his country, combining his love of medicine with his unwavering commitment to the men and women of the Armed Forces. Throughout his military career, he cared for soldiers and their families, led with integrity, and earned the respect of colleagues through his steady leadership, compassion, and calm presence.

His service included multiple deployments to the Middle East. On September 11, 2001, he responded with courage when the Pentagon came under attack, helping care for those affected by the tragedy. He retired from the Army in 2015 with the rank of Colonel after thirty years of distinguished service. Never one to stop serving, Jon continued his work with the federal government as a civilian for another five years.

Outside of his profession, Jon found great joy in caring for the people he loved. Whether preparing a meal for family and friends, traveling with Rhonda, serving faithfully at church, or quietly working on a puzzle, he approached each activity with gratitude and enthusiasm. Those who knew him best will forever remember the way he would throw his head back and laugh with his whole heart, a booming laugh that filled the room and made everyone around him smile.

He was preceded in death by his parents Pastor Carl and Lucille Fruendt.

He is survived by his loving wife, Rhonda; his son, Adam Fruendt and his wife, Melissa; his daughter, Kelly Davison and her husband, Jonathan; his cherished grandchildren, Cooper and Quinn; his brothers, Dave Fruendt and his wife, Judy, Donald Fruendt, Dale Fruendt and his wife, Connie, and Mark Fruendt and his wife, Renee; and his sister, Carol Pfitzinger and her husband, Walt.

Jon's legacy lives on in the countless patients he cared for, the soldiers he served alongside, and, most importantly, in the family he loved so deeply. His life was marked by faith, service, humility, and love, and he will be profoundly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, August 13, 2026, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Porter Loring Mortuary, 1101 McCullough Ave., San Antonio, Texas.

A Funeral Service will be held on Friday, August 14, 2026, at 9:00 a.m. at Mount Calvary Lutheran Church, 308 Mt. Calvary Dr., San Antonio, Texas.

A Committal Service will follow at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, 1520 Harry Wurzbach Rd., San Antonio, Texas.
