With profound sadness we announce the passing of Jose L. Mata, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend who peacefully left us on January 15, 2025, in San Antonio, TX. He was 68 years old.
He was born on February 5, 1956, in Edinburg, TX. to Miguel Mata and Josephina Garcia. He was a proud native of the Rio Grande Valley. He was a graduate of PSJA Class of 1974 and proudly attended his class reunions.
Joe proudly served his country with honor, serving time in the United States Air Force. His time in the military shaped much of his character and instilled in him a deep sense of discipline, integrity, and service to others. After his honorable discharge he went on to have a successful career with the United States Postal Service. There he accrued ample awards. He oversaw the Rio Grande District Area and directly contributed to the district’s success. Joe was presented with the service award pin in recognition for 40 plus years to government service. He was most proud of his zero use of sick leave signifying his dedication.
Jose L. Mata’s proudest legacy was his family. He is survived by his beloved wife Rosa Maria Mata, his sons, Michael Mares (Rebecca), and Marc A. Mata (Kristy); daughter, Crystal R. Razsaladin (Tehron); grandchildren, Dorian Sandoval (Vanessa), Tristan Mares (Christina), Marcos Mares, Seviana Razsaladin, Ziyah Razsaladin, Zeric Razsaladin, Kiara Razsaladin, and Marley Mata; sisters, Estella Garza, and Maria Mata; brother, Miguel Mata (Patricia); nieces, Michelle Emersen (Bart), Rebecca Garza (Anthony), and Esperanza Pena (Enrique); nephews, Ramiro Garza, and Diego Mata; and numerous grand-nieces and nephews. His family adored him deeply.
He was a man of faith who found comfort in the Lord. He cherished the simple joys of life. Whether watching his grandchildren grow, sharing meals with family and friends, or offering guidance for those in need. Jose’s warm and caring nature were felt by all who crossed his path.
The family will receive friends from 5:00-7:00 PM on Thursday, February 6, 2025, at Porter Loring Mortuary West, 1710 W Loop 1604 N., San Antonio, TX 78251 (located near SeaWorld), with a Rosary being recited at 7:00 PM. Mass will be Celebrated at 9:30 AM on Friday, February 7, 2025, at St. Dominic Catholic Church, 5919 Ingram Rd., San Antonio, TX 78228. Interment will follow, with Military Honors, at 11:00 AM at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital to reflect Jose’s commitment to children with cancer.
