José “Pepe”Peña bravely battled cancer and went to be with Our Lord on May 17, 2021. He was born in Laredo, Texas to José Peña Sr. and Delia Casso. At the age of sixteen, he graduated high school and soon after packed his belongings and “headed up Highway 35 in a ’37 Chevy”, as he would say. He made San Antonio, Texas his new home.
He enrolled in college and began working for the San Antonio Police Department. He retired ater 33 years of service with the Police Department. That same spirit of service also led him to coach youth baseball, football and basketball for over 20 years.
Family was everything to José. He was a husband to Janie, with whom he shared 49 years of marriage. His one desire: to make it to 50 years of marriage with his beloved “Hanna”. Together, they had three children: Rinaldo, Lizzette and Maira.
José worked hard to send his children to privateschool, ensure they went on vacation every summer and make sure they had everything they needed. He stressed the importance of education to his children and made certain his three children went to college.
José loved music and dancing. His favorite band was The Mavericks and he saw them perform live in concert several times. He could often be found cheering on his beloved San Antonio Spurs and Houston Texans. He enjoyed fishing, good food and Westerns. He had a green thumb and a wonderful sense of humor. He was an avid joke teller and never met a stranger.
He leaves to cherish his memory: his wife, Janie; son, Rinaldo Peña; daughters, Lizette Baker (Duwan) and Maira Ugalde (Daniel); grandchildren, Logan Alexander, Daniel Gilberto, Sophia Iris and Dominik Noble.

The Broken Chain
We little knew that morning that
God was going to call your name. In
life we loved you dearly, in death we
do the same--It broke our hearts to
lose you, you did not go alone; for
part of us went with you, the day
God called you home.--You left us
peaceful memories, your love is still
our guide; and though we cannot see
you, you are always at our
side.--Our family chain is broken
and nothing seems the same; but as
God calls us one by one, the chain
will link again.
