I knew Joe from High School. He was a senior when he came to McAllen and I was a freshman. We were doubles partners in district play. We were the number 2 team for McHi. We never lost a match in district competition. 
I have a wife and two small children now so I wanted Joe's wife and kids to know what an outstanding husband and Daddy they had. I know this is not news to you but I wanted them to know that even in High School Joe was a wonderful man and example. He had an infectious spirit of optimism about him. I'm sorry for the lateness of this note but I only heard about it this Thanksgiving. I was greatly saddened by the loss for the family. But I am so glad he is not gone forever. Those who have accepted Christ as Savior will be with him again one day soon.

Remembering Joseph reminded me of the Saturday we spent all day playing football and lawn darts in the backyard when you all lived over by Nixon H.S. I was about 13 and Joseph was about 10. I remember he also showed me my first copy of a Sports Illustrated, Football Edition, it really sparked my livelong love of Football. It's funny how something so small influenced that part of my life. We didn't see each other much but the times we did stayed with me. I'll always remember Joseph as that little boy with the Beatle haircut. Our love and prayers go out to the Best families.

I am writing this note today to tell you what I admire most about Joe Best. It was not his accomplishments that defined his life, but rather the manner in which he lived his life. He always had a smile on his face, a positive attitude, and a tender heart. These were the tools that Joe used to build the foundation of his life. He believed in having fun and living life to the fullest, but he also believed in the importance of responsibility and of putting others first. Joe saw the promise in each person and worked hard to help others realize their gifts and achieve their potential. The tennis court, the classroom, and the church were but a few of the arenas where he used his energy, his enthusiasm, and his compassion to positively change peoples lives. Joe was my tennis instructor for seven years at the San Antonio Country Club during my time in junior high and high school. I had trouble playing competitively on the junior varsity tennis team. Joe believed in me and my tennis abilities; even when I doubted myself. His coaching helped me work my way from the bottom of junior varsity to a starting position on the high school varsity tennis team. I earned the annual Most Improved Tennis Player award my senior year in high school, and I owe that to Joe Best. He was a mentor and a positive role model to me during my teenage years. Where did he get his strength? Where did he get all of his energy and all of his love? The answer is simple. These were God?s gifts that he gave to Joe to use in this brief time here on this earth. All of you are the great friends and family members that he was lucky enough to know and to love in his life. I stress the word love because it is this that spurns us on everyday in our daily struggles and in our joy. It is love that makes life worth living. And it is love that will continue to make Joe an important part of your lives. Joe?s mother said to me last Wednesday evening ?I feel like God let us borrow Joe for a while, and I thank him for the love that this gift brings to our lives.? Amen to that.

We were saddened to hear of Joe's passing. My wife and I attended Nixon High School in Laredo with him. Joe and I played many a tennis match at the Market Street courts most of which he won. Know that our prayers are with your family.

In his passing we are reminded of those precious memories that brought so many families together along those distant banks of the Frio River. First of all I would like to extend my condolesces to the Best Family. He was a great individual who loved life, family and his children. I first met Joe in 1997 while working at the Tennis Shop at San Antonio Country Club. He was a great guy and a great friend. Last time I saw him was this past Sunday Nov. 10. I hugged my friend and I told him how he was doing. His replied was, "Erick, I am loving life. I'm still teaching and I love it. How is your wife?" I told him about my family and I asked him about his kids and he said, "They are great!" Then I saw him play tennis for about close to 1 1/2 hour. He loved his tennis and he played well. If I would have known that was the last time I would have said hi to him, I would have told him that I enjoy his great friendship with me. I will miss my friend, his smile, but the greatest attribute this world will miss is his joy for life and that great smile of his. That smile would light every candle and light bulb in the world. Joe, my friend, thank you for being part of my life.

What can I say, this has been another terrible shock in my life! Even though Joe and I would not see each other as often, except at out family reunions, we always felt that special bond we had while growing up together. He was always concerned, last time we spoke in Laredo, speaking of my loss and his divorce, he told me "you are going to be okay, we are going to be okay". So you all have to hold on to God's word and know that with God's grace, he will stengthen you too. I love you all and will keep you in my prayers.

I just found out this morningThurs. about Joe, so I wasn't able to attend either ceremony in San Antonio or Laredo. My heart sank when I heard the news. Joe was the type of person who gave you such a warm feeling when you were around him... I feel very close to him even though I haven't seen or spoken to him much in the last 20 years. 
I played doubles with Joe for a number of years when we were juniors. It was always a lot of fun. We got very excited every time we won another match. The more we played together, the better we did. 
I have not met a lot of people with a kinder soul than Joe Best. Joe always had a positive thing to say. Joe always had a smile on his face and was a joy to be around. The few times I did see or hear from him in the past 20 years, we would reflect back on our younger days playing against our rivals and laugh. Joe had a pure heart of gold and even though I have not spent much time with Joe lately, it makes my heart sink knowing that he is not around. 
I could go on and on about Joe, he was simply a very loving person to his family and friends and he will be deeply missed.

Dear Best Family- I was a tennis student of Joe?s sometime ago at the San Antonio Country Club. He was not just a teacher to me; he was a friend and mentor. He taught me much about life and tennis. I don't remember how long we talked, but I do remember my son was begging to go home and eat. The second time we spoke briefly was at J.J's birthday party. I wish we had more time to get to know Joe. Dylan remembers him as a very happy, fun dad. We all have a wonderful angel watching over us. We will always remember his smile. Dear Gloria and Herb, 
My heart is heavy and aches for you. I know that your strong faith will sustain you and your family and grandchildren and get you through all this. I guess God just needed Joe on the courts of heaven earlier than we ever thought. It has been sometime since we have seen each other and it saddens me to know that I have lived for several years now only blocks away from Joe and his family - Thousand Oaks. But I have a memory of Joe that shows what a faithful, caring friend he was. And what a friend he was to my Stephanie. Do you remember Herb when it was prom time and Joe asked you to talk to me because I wasn't going to let her go to the prom with her prom date because he didn't have a driver's license. I was insisting an adult drive? Joe, seeking a way to keep his friend of many years from being embarassed got you to arrange things with me so that I agreed that if Steph and her date went in the same vehicle as Joe and his date, I would let her go no adult. You and Joe both assured me he was a good driver. Caring friend that he was, he saved a young friend from severe embarrassment and humiliation. With a big smile on his face it seemed he was always smiling, he indulged me my "first prom" photos of my daughter, insisting they had plenty of time for pictures and all the while the other three were ready to take off. Though Joe may be now in heaven with our dear Lord, he shall live on and on in our hearts and memories. Be at peace my friends and secure in the knowledge that you had the BEST son who impacted postively on the lives of everyone that knew him. May God continue to bless all of you

I wish to offer my deepest condolensces to Joe's wife and his children. Also, to his parents and his brothers. 
I'd known Joe since 3rd grade. We played tennis, flag football and basketball together at Milton. His brother Herbie was our flag football coach in 6th grade. His mother was a teacher at our school. I spent many an afternoon playing basketball at Joe's house or just playing in his room. I hadn't see Joe in quite some time, but Robbie Greenblum would let me know of he was doing and what he was doing. 
The picture here tells the story of Joe Best. Always smiling, with a kind word for everybody. I'm proud to say Joe Best was my close personal friend. 
To his wife and children I wish to express that the love that we all felt for Joe was because he was a great person and great friend. To the family of Joe Best, Like many others, I am very saddened at the loss of your son, brother, father. The news of Joe's untimely death saddened me more than I can say. While it had been more than 20 years since I had seen or spoken to Joe, his memory is still very much alive. I went to school with Joe at C.L.Milton Elementary, Lamar Jr. High and J.W. Nixon High School in Laredo, until his father's transfer to the Valley. I had the pleasure of riding with Joe everyday for several years as we carpooled to our junior high. Mrs. Best Joe's mom picked us up every afternoon and my mom, Jeanne took us in the morning. Joe had the joy of riding in the backseat of a blue VW superbeetle with my little sister, Nicole. He somehow made the best of dealing with a six year old every morning, even conversing with her. Actually, I think his love of life allowed him to enjoy this time. He was kind enough to play tennis with me at the Nixon tennis courts--I use the word "play" rather loosely, even though I was awful. He was always willing to try new things and was unphased by stereotypes. I remember when he decided he was going to perm his very straight hair because he wanted an "afro". There are so many wonderful memories that I have of Joe. Not one is sad. He really did love life and lived it. I hope I have conveyed what an impact Joe had on my life so many years ago - so long ago and yet not. I would like all of you to know how much he will be missed, but more importantly how much he is remembered today and how much he will continue to be remembered tomorrow. I would like to close this tribute to Joe with one of his humorous comments -My mother, the morning chauffeur, was notorious for being late, she also thought there was a conspiracy to keep all slow drivers on the road in front of her VW Bug. Thus, riding to school in the morning was rather stressful, even for teenagers. Joe said, "Steph, I don't know how your mother does it, when she arrives at my house in the morning we are already late for school, but by the time we get to the Jr. High we are just on time. I think she must be related to Superman and she is able to reverse time." When I think of Joe Best, I think of the epitome of the person who always looked at the glass as half full; never, ever half empty. My biggest regret is that I never said these things to him - so, today I say them to all of you. All of you are Joe Best. My heart goes out to all of you in this very difficult time. If ever there was a life fully lived, one filled with lasting achievement, it was Joe's. In the few years I knew Joe, he had already lived more in 18 years than most people do in 80. To Laura Best, 
and Mr. and Mrs. Herb Best and family: Joe Best, was married to Laura Best and had three beautiful godly children, J.J, Jeremy and little Rachel. They were both very instrumental in bringing healing to the hurting individuals through the S.A.V.I.O.R. ministry sponsored at Cornerstone. When I went through my class with SAVIOR, they were there. They were very committed to being used by the Lord, even during Laura's busy schedule as a Pharmacist, and during her pregnancy with Rachel. They were always there! Later, I met Joe again, as he was going through his own heartbreaking divorce. As we all know, bad things happen to good people. Joe was hurting and so were his kids. During this class we saw the manifestation of a heart being renewed and restored in Joe. God touched Joe in a very special way, using fellow LOVED members in that healing process. Sue Gross, LOVED Class Lead Facilitator for the Children, was also used tremendously in bring healing to the Best children. We saw the evidence on graduation night when J.J took the microphone and spoke for about 20 minutes on what the LOVED Class did for him. Joe and Laura sat in the audience that night, with big smiles, and proud hearts for what God had begun in their child. The Lord took what Satan meant to destroy these children's lives, and turned it around to bring Glory to GOD! After graduation, Joe always made it a point to seek Rico and I out, and let us know how and what he was doing. JOe was just that type of guy. Joe had the uncanny ability to speak to you, and make you feel you were the only person in the room. He made you feel special. Since the divorce, he had learned to forgive, and he Laura had begun to have a blessed relationship, one where he was truly happy for her, releasing her as she also began her new life. He told me last year, that he was going back to college to get his teaching degree. He told me he had always wanted to teach "Spanish". He was from Laredo, Texas, graduated from McAllen High School, and was an excellent Tennis professional instructor. Yet, he wanted more. He DID go back to college, got his teaching certificate, and was already working as a bilingual teacher!! ALL this healing, going back to school, getting a teaching position, within 18-24 months!!! Yet he still wanted more... he wanted to be the best Dad there was, and he wanted to get his life together, he wanted to be a godly example to his kids, and he wanted to have his life edify God and others. He had achieved all those goals, and more, when this happened. Joe, you will always be remembered as young and vibrant, you will always be remembered as a dear friend, and you will always be L.O.V.E.D.!! Linda and Rico Brambila

Dear Laura, and all family members, My name is Ryan O'Connor, I don't know if you remember me, but I was a student of Joe's at the San Antonio Country Club for several years. Joe was a pleasure and a gift to be around. He appreciated every part of being alive, and only saw the best characteristics in everyone that he met. My memories of lessons with Joe are always going to be some of my most favorable moments of tennis that I will ever have. Joe was an awesome instructor because he loved tennis with a passion, and loved sharing his gift with people like me. I still play tennis and love it, part of this is attributable to Joe. Teachers like him are not common. His desire to help people and his love of tennis have always been an inspiration for me. I consider myself so very fortunate to have been a friend with Joe for the time I was. He was an inspiration, a model of the way to appreciate life, and a loving husband/father/family member. My prayers and heart go out to Joe's family and friends. Joe's Godly spirit & faith was an inspiration to everyone that knew him. I had the opportunity to visit with Joe as the "Garner Family" once again gathered to remember my "Uncle Bill". We spoke of memories of Garner Park where there so many of us that grew up together although in different cities, our families remain in each others hearts, share love, wonderful memories, weddings, births, and comfort in our losses. Joe spoke with so much love of his children and we laughed about the memories of he, along with my sisters Teri Lu & Sheryl, Greg & Jack and the biggest "kid" Harry Rose entertaining my children teaching them to play washers, cards, or taking them to the river.

Joe Best was truly the Best when it came to friendship, humor, compassion, a two handed backhand, nicknames for everyone, smiles, jokes, concern about you, love for his family, but most of all a diciple for the Lord. We would spend our hour tennis lesson hitting balls for 20 minutes and 40 minutes talking about our spiritual lives. Oh and of coarse a few jokes thrown in, which he gave credit to his father for. To know Joe you would also know of his loving relationship with his family and children. I will never forget his necklace that he always wore "Try God". He will never be forgotten and his family will be in our prayers. I know that with God's permission I will someday see Joe again on a golden tennis court, with beautiful weather, a perfect backhand and with the latest heavenly jokes around.

Laura you will be in our prayers and thoughts. We are truly sorry and will keep you and the children in our prayers.
