Joseph (Joe) Curtin, beloved husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather, brother and friend, was called home by the Lord on Wednesday, February 13, 2013. Born June 8, 1943 in Bellows Falls, Vermont to Thomas and Mary Galway Curtin, Joe grew up moving to many cities where his father was employed as a hotel manager for Sheraton Hotels. He earned his B.S. in Accounting from the University of Scranton; going on to attain his CPA certification. Joe had a diverse career that began with Arthur Andersen & Co. moving to such notable companies as Pennzoil Company and Duval Corporation (Pennzoil Subsidiary), Denhome Modern Danish Furniture, Petro-Valve, and culminating with the formation of Curtin Enterprises Inc., a management and operations consulting firm that he owned and operated for twenty-one years.
He loved all kinds of music, reading, especially mysteries, and was somewhat of an expert about old movies. He was an avid Astros fan and loved all things baseball. When his sons Mark, Scott and Geoff were young he spent many years coaching their little league teams. He also held several positions on the Alief Little League Board; and was actively involved in many other community and religious endeavors.
Whoever coined the phrase "Stubborn Irishman" surely had Joe in mind. Joe was very proud of his Irish heritage and enjoyed having a beer with the best of them. He was a man of very strong principles and never wavered in his convictions. One of the original parishioners of Notre Dame Church in Houston, Joe was honored with the Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice medal, an award of the Roman Catholic Church given for distinguished service to the church by lay people and clergy. It is the highest medal that can be awarded to the laity by the Papacy.
Preceded in death by his parents, Joe is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Marianne; sons Mark and wife Darcy, Houston; Scott and wife Cynthia, San Antonio; and Geoff, also Houston. He also leaves behind his cherished grandchildren Geoffrey, Isabella and Patrick Curtin, San Antonio; sister Maureen and husband Mel Hetzel, San Francisco; and much loved nieces and nephews. A longtime resident of Houston, Texas, Joe and his wife Marianne moved to San Antonio in June of 2012. Viewing will be Monday February 18 from 6:00 - 9:00 p.m. at Porter Loring North Chapel.
